Replicating Mini bumper effect

Our Mini is proper shite spec. A City with black grille and bumpers. It should look like this.

The bumpers have a slightly matt finish to them. The bumpers currently fitted to the Mini are quite shiny, but the paint is flaking off. Planning to overhaul them but I wondered what your recommendations would be for a paint that'll prove resilient and give the right sort of look. I'll be after a fair old quantity of the stuff as I also plan to use it to turn some old radiators into solar water heaters... (hence the resilient bit is important).

Ah yes. Rustoleum. Have been meaning to try that for a while now. Duly ordered. Thanks!

Hoping that smartening the ol' girl up a bit will at least generate some interest. Not had even a sniff so far.

alright, the mini marked an important turn in automotive history yadda yadda...but I want that 9 in the background!!!

I know they are unpopular on this site but I do like Minis especially in pov spec....

back in the 80's and 90's minis were about as cheap as you could get and were the car I and I suspect many others cut our knuckles on...I had about half a dozen between 1989 and 2001....but they are now scene taxed and stupdly expensive...

I used to love trashing them on a 8 mile farm track circuit we had - half a bottle of scotch - strap youself in and see if you could get round asap without killing yourself..

Are they scene taxed? I'm asking £2495 for mine, and that seems to be widely regarded as exceedingly optimistic. Mk1s are certainly pricey, and commercials for some reason. Compared to Fiat 500s and even 2CVs, I think Minis are dirt cheap (albeit perhaps not Autoshite-cheap).

Scene-taxed examples: Mini @ £2495, 2CV at a similar price.

Non-scene-taxed examples: This @ €888 or this @ €900.

Somewhere in the middle: This @ €1800.

Of the five, I'd probably have the Autobianchi- it's seriously fun to drive, but surprisingly comfortable, too.

defo - 10 years ago sound minis culd be picked up for £300...even taking into account inflation this was cheap - maybe they have becoe scarce driving the price up but certainly the Coopers anre scene taxed...

I do have the horn for a Clubman GT though.....

Funnily enough I was discussing that very model with a mate of mine the other day who is mini daft.

I just had to tell him that back in '86 my '83 Mitsubishi Mirage 1250 could blow them into the weeds - had a heady 55hp under the hood though

Suspect it might have also been the aftermarket steering wheel that tuned things up

My Polo Coupe S only had 55bhp, I thought that was nippy enough.

I'd like to try a Mini, the go kart handling appeals.

Save time and money (£495.00) - shop local and get a better car for your money that actually looks a bit like a mini (if you squint)

Brand new black bumpers are £20 each, just thinking maybe by the time you've dicked about with primer and paint.....

Yeah, but it just seems so wasteful. These bumpers are only a few years old. Maybe if they cost a bit more than £20 they'd be better quality... It didn't take me long to improve the 2CV's wheels, so I'll go the paint route for now. Might get closer to the proper finish that way too. New bumpers are far too shiny.

I know what you mean but there comes a point where its a question of time and effort just to save a couple of quid, and yes as with most parts these days most chrome and stainless steel items are shite quality.

Depending on the state they're in and if you need to prime them I suppose a can of Tough Black in satin would do.

That's definitely true. The headlamp surrounds are going in the bin. They were brand new at the same time. I'm glad the 2CV has pretty much ZERO chrome. I even removed the chrome sill strips it should wear. Pointless crap.
