Quick MGF question

My work mate came into work this morning swearing about his 1996 MGF VVC, It seems at the weekend the cambelt and head gasket went on it, I'm not sure how a cambelt AND the head gasket can fail at the same time but he's adamant that's whats happened.

The car it self from memory is pretty tidy in bright red and about 60-70k on the clock, As my mate is skint at the moment and can't afford to fix it i jokingly said I'd give him £200 for it as it is.

Is this a mistake?, how much could it cost to fix up roughly?, Is it really worth pissing about with as well as i don't want it, I'd only do it to sell back on for a profit or would there be better money in to if it broke the car for spares.

This is all very hypothetical as i doubt he'd accept my offer anyway but just in case he does i need to know whether there's any point in pissing about with it or not.

Probably be easier to break it Mike. Technically it is possible for the pump to be on the way to seizing, engine overheats and blows HG, pump finally siezes fully, snaps cambelt. Station might biuy the whole car - we all know he LOVES fixing MGFs'! :D (sorry Station)

For £200 you won't go far wrong I'd have though as it's strip/weigh in for more*. Second hand engine obviously the best bet if you can try it out first and the headgasket hasn't conked out. From reading what Station said about his though it sounds like a bastard of a job. If it hasn't got an MOT then sell it 'as is' on an internet auction site or break it and weigh in as earlier.

*This isn't a for sale thread ;)

I forgot that these are mid engined, I might not bother then, I've seen a few engines on ebay for about £300 but by the time I've pissed about trying it fit and getting bored of doing and then finding the head gaskets shagged on the new engine I might as well not have bothered, I might just forget about it, The alloys might be worth a bit of coin though.

Could it have been water pump failure/shear off? Anyway Trigger, buy it, strip it. Apart from the obvious they have the supposedly desirable alloy inlet manifold on a VVC.

I'll have a chat with him tomorrow and a think, I have a farm yard i can use to store it but it's just being arsed to strip and trying to sell the parts on ebay to the mongs out there.

Not that hard to get, bro. Loads of NOS around not long ago.

Trig, It's gonna be a pain in the arse. You'll be stripping the car (as it's not gonna be much use to you) and if NI price is any measure, they're worth not much, even working. My ex Susie had one of these, and I did a donk change. ONE SERIOUS PAIN IN THE ARSE. And that was not just her it was the car as well. Susie had nice tits, the car was a pain in the tits.
