the 2.0 non turbo makes 145 bhp .

As opposed to 123bhp by the injected 2.0 Granada/Sierra DOHC. 20-odd years for a 18% improvement in power, and that's without accounting for the extra weight it has to shift.

Mk3 Escort 1.6, Focus Mk1 2.0 Zetec or Mk 3 Focus 1.6 TDci.?

Having had the use of one of the company's 1.6 TDCI Focii for a few days, I'd use a pushbike pulling a skateboard over it.

I nearly got it booked in to the garage, but apparently they're all like that - gutless to the point of being dangerous. Pull out of a junction and just a fraction too few revs leaves you stranded in turbo lag that would put a OMGWTFBBQ Evo 8 to shame. It's also tacky inside with poor plastics, and the economy is OK, but no better than my colleague's 130ps Mondeo Titanium X on the same journey to work - about 54mpg average.

But how much of that extra power would it have been able to produce without the turbo? Probably about a third of it tops.

Why is that relevant?

Unless it has massive lag (which I doubt) its not an issue/

Because it's a technology that had already been pretty well-developed back in the day, and, even if the lag has been tone down, it still remains much less durable than NA power delivery.

Out of curiosity, what are your 80s leaps and bounds?

As above: Independent suspension, fuel injection, electronic ignition. Things like cruise and abs that caught on in the 90s/early 00s also came to market in the 1980s, but I don't consider them as fundamental.

and its much lower emissions.

Well, that is undoubtedly true, but it does nothing to help the average motorist. It's just politics...they don't dare to even contemplate making India and China conform to global environmental standards for their dodgy factories, so they get obsessed with CO2 emissions in order to be seen as doing something...

modern turbo'd family cars don't really have any lag at all, they have more power and have much lower emissions than larger engines with the same power, and in real terms the cars are cheaper now.

how slow, unreliable and shit modern cars are, mondeo's this time i think.

I hasten to add that IMHO responsibility for this slowing-down of progress lies chiefly with politcians/eco-fascists as opposed to the carmakers themselves. The 1990s research bugets got gobbled up by crash-safety (and nowadays all the cars have to look the same because of pedestrian impact...but have you seen any BUSES that have been designed to minimise it?), and currently they're all made to cut down on emissions of CO2, which, at the end of the day, is a gas that's always been abundant in nature! It's 80% stupid window-dressing and 20% good-intentions-but-no-plan politics.

cars through the ages have pretty much all looked the same.

But not because the law made them look the same- and there had often been exceptions (e.g. Citroen)

Progress hasnt been slowed down artificially, theres only so much you can do with the internal combustion engine, specially the petrol engine. it might have a turbo and a computer nowadays but the metal bit in the middle has not changed much since the 1940's or whatever, because theres simply not a lot you can do with it, its limited by laws of physics that have been constant since the enigne was invented. No-one has found a better solution than it so far but thats not for the want of trying.

Well, there's a given amount of posters posting about a given set of topics! Imagine if we were on a forum called "thefutureoftheglobaleconomy.com". Now THAT would be boring.

Do your bit to alleviate boredom by posting MOAR Kadett pics! :D
