Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Arming myself with info for Wednesday's viewing and negotiations, I've been looking for a maintenance schedule for the 605. According to this, in addition to some reasonable-looking stuff (wonder why spark plugs dissapeared from modern servicing schedules...gr9.7 4 leaving you stranded when they go pop after 3 years' time!), it needs a new oil filler cap and even dipstick every two years/36k km. I've never seen anything like that on any other car I've owned...although I've never owned anything that was made before 1984. Has anyone come across any similar requirement? Is it a load of bollocks, or will the lack of a history of new dipsticks result in global warming and dead kittens?
seth Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Only reasons I can think of is that the filler cap incorporates a breather of some sort that could become blocked and there's a seal of some sort on the dipstick that can age and the engine needs it fully sealed for emissions or some such.

Or the dipstick could be plastic and fall apart every time you try and check the oil level, like the C4's does. It's on its sixth or seventh now I think.
shite_meister Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Minis/A-series had an oil cap that had a built-in breather which was supposed be replaced as part of the service schedule, as for the dipstick I've not 'eard of that one before but as Whatonbuttyboy says; some cars are a bit shit in the dipstick area, on VW/VAG cars theres a plastic collar that always breaks, mind you thats not the actual dipstick so I'll grab me coat.
Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 Could it be a possibly pointless entry in the service schedule, so that the main dealer can charge you a little bit more and if missed off by another garage a way of invalidating the warranty as the manufacturer's service schedule has not been followed? (Or am I being too cynical?) That's exactly what I'm thinking, although it's just for charging more as opposed to anything else- in 1990, the warranty would've been about 3 minutes long and the EU hadn't come up with the obvious solution of letting people have their new cars serviced away from the stealer.
Barry Cade Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Didn't a lot of Pugs have the dipstick built into the cap, which also had a sponge/mesh bit inside. The long spirally one that you could never read properly after an oil change
r.welfare Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 On the old 405 TD's, the dipstick slots into the oil filler, and has a piece of plastic to stop it going in more than a certain amount; over time this gets brittle and eventually snaps. Wonder if the Douvrin V6 has a similar arrangement?
mattblack Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Dipsticks get shorter with age, eventualy they don't reach the oil any more...
