real world fuel consumption

32.8mpg out of the Accord over the last 11,000 miles. Not great but probably par for the course for a 1.8-litre automatic, and this generation of Accord isn't noted for stellar fuel economy anyway. Best has been 38mpg (long motorway trips for the whole tankful, cruising at 65-ish), worst 26mpg in the freezing cold with lots of town work.

Avensis doesn't have accurate records kept, but the computer usually indicates 37mpg which is pretty damn good given my wife treats the accelerator as an on/off switch and often forgets it has a fifth gear - best I achieved over a tank was 44mpg, again mainly motorway work at 70mph or so.

Both my current cars have trip computers, which tell me the following:

Ford Cougar

Around town approx. 22mpg

A/B roads approx. 27/28mpg

Motorways approx. 33mpg

Not too bad for a two and a half litre pez?

Mondeo TDCi

Around town approx. 32mpg

A/B roads approx. 46mpg

Motorways approx. 52mpg

On A/B roads it seemingly doesn't matter whether I tease the throttle, or drive this thing like I stole it - there's barely a 1mpg difference.

Both cars could be lying to me, as I can't be arsed working the consumption out myself. It wouldn't make any difference anyhow - they use what they use and I'll still have to fill them up.

I always fill all of mine right up & work it out every time.

944 between 29 and an all time best of 32 - with a one time 25

Scirocco on pierburg carb 28 on new shiny weber 36

VW Camper best ever 29 - worst ever 16 - which was a bit of a bastard because the fuel gauge hasn't worked for 50,000 miles so I always fill it up after 200 miles and on this occasion it did 196 miles.

t's funny you should say that, a mates wife told me their VW Golf TDI got 61mpg, I asked how she knew that, she replied, "oh it's always done that".

I said humour me and actually record the mileage and the fuel used.

She was actually getting 45mpg and was well pissed off
