Father Ted Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Yes, but mine says Austin at the botom and comes from a 1986 Metro grille.Well, I says comes from a 1986 metro, it was never actually fitted to the metro.I'll post a picture when I get in off my night shift.
scooters Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 thanks your holieness, I know the one and I think it would work - tbh anything would be better than what is there now - the problem is I suppose that it isn't one of the more 'pretty' car badges so they tend to get binned! I can get loads of chrome, MGs, Morris, Austin, BL but nothing 70's and plastic!
Wilko220 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Shouldn't it be a 'Leyland' badge on a Sherpa of that era?I must be wrong because I'm sure you've done your research, but I didn't think the Austin/Morris badge existed in '74.
scooters Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 Yes Wilco - you are correct the early ones like my one had a silver painted grille and "Leyland" as the only badge. In 1975 this changed to silver grille with "Sherpa" as the only badge by 1978 it was a Black Grille with "Sherpa" in the same place as the others but about 4 inches below that is a place for another badge and this is where they put the corporate Austin/Morris logo - the diagonal blue strip as seen on other BL tat of the period. The 1978 grille isn't just different in colour - it is a different grille Now my van, should have a silver grill with "Leyland" as it is a 74/75 BUT at some point the grille was replaced with a black grill from a later van and the owner removed the Sherpa badge and replaced it with the "Leyland" badge from his old grille. I'm trying to source a silver grille for my van but they are like rocking horse poo - in the meantime I'm stuck with the 78 one which is fine only the badge area for the AM badge is blank and looks odd - the previous owner had mountewd a tiny MG roundel here - If I can't find a square AM badge then I'll add a larger MG octagon or perhaps a British Leyland Blue Logo just to fill in the gap really - but it sounds like Ted's Austin badge might be ideal
Wilko220 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Sorry - was being dumb. I thought you meant you wanted to make your '78 grille look like a '74 one. I see what you mean now!
scooters Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 yup but the bottom left one would do as well
RedSparrow Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Didn't some of them say Freight/Rover? or was that just later when they got on to calling them 200/400 series??
scooters Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 Didn't some of them say Freight/Rover? or was that just later when they got on to calling them 200/400 series?? I think the FR was when they brought in square headlights - I am no expert post 1978!
Wilko220 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 If you look closely at the pic above, the bottom right has a Freight Rover badge and the bottom left an Austin Morris one.
Father Ted Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Finished my night shift and got my arse in gear....
