Angrydicky Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I use an old tecalemit? grease gun my dad bought from a boot sale years ago. There's usually loads on Ebay. It has a flexible extension that makes life much easier. Something like this would be ideal. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Grease-Gun-/19050 ... 2c5b174363
dollywobbler Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 While we're on the subject, the Scimitar uses Triumph TR-based front suspension, and the usual advice is to use a heavy oil rather than grease. Anyone had any experience of using heavy oil for lubrication? I get in enough mess with the grease gun...
warren t claim Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Are the Sherpa kingpins worn? If so a replacement/refurbished front axle is the only solution. Or a cheap grease-gun filled with ipson.....
scooters Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Are the Sherpa kingpins worn? If so a replacement/refurbished front axle is the only solution. Or a cheap grease-gun filled with ipson..... nope - wear and tear is ok - precautionary really - the Sherpa mob over on Total-LDV recommend religious greasing of the king pins every 1000 miles to avoid wear given the replacement job is such a pig and that the vans eat pins if not greased. They recommend using the highest pressure gun you can get to ensure the grease gets all round the pin. You can get replacment axels but the usual method is to make sure you get good quality after market ones- drop the axel off and press the new ones in - you need a press to do it. You can do it in situ but I don't fancy it hence the grease gun question. I had a small grease gun for the moggy but it didn't have sufficiant squirting power to get into the sherpa king pins

Des Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Move your steering lock to lock while you grease so it works in nicely, a blast of gearoil first is good for flushing out the old crap, and don't use the normal HMP grease you would for a wheel bearing, it absorbs moisture and the pins will wear out from corrosion. Self adhesive lead flashing from a DIY shop can make good soundproofing, cuts down on resonance. Will make your van more attractive to pikeys mind.
