GARAGE LIGHTING

i have a fluorescent light with 2 tubes lighting my garage, at the moment mounted in one corner for convenience.

Being an old light it often does not come on and needs a bang, don't we all !!, to start it up, have tried new tubes and starters but it does not cure it, although it always works eventually. It's an old factory light.

Thing is, what is the best light to replace it with? the present one is on a plug as i have 4 sockets in the garage, so i want to have a similar arrangement, really need something that is waterproof, so i can remount it in a better place, as although i have a dehumidifier, damp, or the odd drip of water could be a problem. Is another strip light the answer? or would something else be better?

P.S DONT WANT TO DO ANY REWIRING except putting on plugs :D , Thanks, for any ideas, Doug.

I have an old rubberlite lorry spotlamp wired up to a car battery. It's dead handy at night, what with the broken reversing lamps on the Cortina which of course needs to be backed into the garage

I'd just pick up another fluorescent tube and not worry too much about it mixing with water if you don't need to touch it.

I ended up calling into work on new years eve to find all the power off. Popped into the plant room and switched it back on, after a while I noticed something odd about the light where I was working. It was a Fluorescent strip light in a waterproof fixing, we have several of these in the kitchens and changing rooms as well. They have a plastic cover on the bottom and a seal around the edge to prevent splashes from below from reaching the fitting, all well and good but it appears they never thought to seal the top of them against water dripping from above. I'd had it switched on for a good 15 minutes with the water level well above the tubes inside and it was working fine

The fittings do seem to wear out over time, the internal ballast goes and its probably cheaper to replace the lot when that happens if you can avoid using a sparky.

Or if you want to ignore me or just fancy a change then I spotted that our local ALDI still have a few external work lights left over from a couple of weeks ago.

Put an RCD btween the socket and the light plug if you want to be safe. You could also use a 1 metre trailing lead with up to 4 sockets on the RCD provided that you have somewhere safe to fix it to and the total load doesn't exceed 13 amps.

Thanks for the replies, i think i may go for another fluorescent and mount it in a better position, in the garage, its only used when i go in there for short periods of time, being a hopeless mechanic, i don't do much work in there, usually just looking for stuff,or doing the odd job, which is a pain in the dark.

The thing that puts me off spotlights, is i nearly bought a stand up type, which was very powerful until a mate told me that staring at it was not recommended and would send me blind :o Doug

Well then heres a tip, dont stand and stare into it!! Point it at whatever you're interested in and look at that instead.

i will tell the kids and the dog that wonderful piece of advice, then again, think i will stick with a strip light!

Do you take steps to protect your kids and dog from the perils of staring into the sun on hot days?

These halogen spotlights aren't much cop anyway. All they do is cast shadows, melt stuff, blow when you really need them and burn loads of electricity.

No one so far has mentioned that using Fluorescent lights in a garage will cause a running engine /fan belt/ moving part to appear stationary, due to the Flikr effect !! mind your fingas !

Exactly what my mate said, thanks for your reply Richard, Mr. stones, is obviously not an authority on spotlights, in fact he seems to have other strange ideas like the pin up of magnum, i prefer girls myself.
