Guest Leonard Hatred Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Gelandewagens are horrifically rust prone too, worse than Discoverys.
ChinaTom Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Agreed with that - the ones that clatter through the village look completely rotten. How much would a rusty but Mot'ed one go for being as the nice ones are all approaching 5 figures?
Timewaster Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 A 'project' one 'should' be around the £150 mark. Not when you can weigh it in for £300! Engines, gearboxes and axles are snapped up by the "Its gripped, sorted - Lets OFF ROAD!" brigade for big money too. There are quite a few people making a good living from paying £500 for an utter disaster of a Discovery and stripping it.
pompei Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 My Fronterror Spurt's seats are pretty good to be fair to it. Unlike the steering which gives new meaning to vagueness. You would never confuse the cart sprung ride with air suspension and the trim is as flimsy as fugg but in all honesty I have found it v entertaining in a hang on tight sort of way. Just can't afford the petrol ... Looks like it's going to be passed onto my brother in law.
Lankytim Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 For me the best 4x4xfar is a V8 Range Rover classic!
Pete-M Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 For me the best 4x4xfar is a V8 Range Rover classic! +1. I have major urges for a very late LSE on gas with air suspension. Must have one of those one day soon.
Lacy Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Can't beat the purity of design of the 2 door.....the 4 door was just an appeasement to market pressures. I mean, marina door handles FFS when the original had those gorgeous big black bomb proof jobbies. As is always the case with genius designs, some faceless git gets put in charge of a 'facelift' and completely misses the point.....exactly the same as that wonderful Conran interior of the 200 series Disco that became the anonymous, bland, mess that replaced it in the 300's......still a league ahead of the Jeep interior though....unless American tack floats your boat of course........
dollywobbler Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I dunno, thought the Disco Series 1 interior was pretty dismal given it had a designer behind it. It could have and should have been a lot more interesting than "ooh, we'll make it blue!" (or beige) I really don't like the LSE. A lot of people say it looks more in proportion than a regular Rangie, but it always looked a bit wrong to me. 2-door is the ultimate but fap me they're getting pricey.
pdg Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Prices I said were what they *should* be, not what they are... 'Tis unfortunate Just shows too many people have more money than sense nowadays young'uns etc. I'm off to reminisce about the good old days with my cornflake packet gaskets and an old pic of the mk2 scrote I paid 50quid for.
Pete-M Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I really don't like the LSE. A lot of people say it looks more in proportion than a regular Rangie, but it always looked a bit wrong to me. 2-door is the ultimate but fap me they're getting pricey. I just like the idea of a slightly longer, slightly more luxurious Classic with a bigger engine. Win Win Win for me. I like the 2dr as well, but it'd have to be a CSK for me. It's like I can't have an E32 BMW because I'd only want the 750iL, and it'd have to be in a certain colour etc etc etc. Top Trumps with old expensive shite. It's a way of life. Always aim for the top and see how much of it you can get to work properly.
forddeliveryboy Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 '70 or '71 RR for me, better quality materials - aluminium especially. But they're not cheap if worth having. I thought the Conran interior was good, too - understated, yes, but it worked well with the vehicle and was practical.
Peter C Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 I would love a LWB G-Wagen but they cost thousands to buy and even more to run and repair. I better explain my previous comment about not wishing to drive pikey type of cars. Whatever I drive, will be my company car. The firm I work for pay me a good salary and car allowance and in return expect me to drive something respectable. My directors approve of the W124 and appreciate that my pristine W123 is always a good talking point with clients. Also, my clients wouldn't appreciate if I turned up at their property in a WIP Mk2 Transit with a leaking sump gasket. A Mk1 Disco can still look respectable, at least with its doors shut to hide rusting sills.
richardthestag Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I mean, marina door handles FFS when the original had those gorgeous big black bomb proof jobbies.... Ahem ..... Lotus Esprit door handles Allagro on the inside though Shite on so many levels Would love a 2 door but with efi, abs and anti roll bars etc that I would need for a daily smoker it would have to be a CSK then I would worry about slinging a whole load of miles at it. 93 vogue with teddy bear seats and a nice big ol v8 suits me down to the ground. Fix it with a hammer, run it on lpg and the ol girl handles a shit load better than front seat passengers think! hense fitment of 2 oh "fuck" handles for them to grab onto
Shep Shepherd Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I dunno, thought the Disco Series 1 interior was pretty dismal given it had a designer behind it. It could have and should have been a lot more interesting than "ooh, we'll make it blue!" (or beige) Calling Terence Conran a designer is a moot point in my opinion. We have a Series 1 V8 as a runaround at work and its interior could be the work of BL, considering how bloody awful it is
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Pajero translates as Wanker! How appropriate!
