CAR MAGS

i have literally hundreds of car mags, in boxes in my spare room, from the 70's,/ 80's,mostly performance car types, hot car, car conversions, fast car, some classic car mags, recent ones mostly, plus a load of bike mags, from 80's and 90's, and a load of mini mags from about 2000 to 2005.

I also had some 50's bike mags, my mates dad gave me and a load more 60's/70's stuff ,motor show books and brochures, which i took to the tip on instructions of the wife!! when we moved house, they would have been worth a few quid looking at stuff on ebay.

Anyway just wondered if anyone has tried selling things like this and had any success ,or know of any firms that may buy them.I don't suppose they will be worth much as they are not in any real order, i buy loads of stuff on ebay but never sell so have no idea if they are worth anything or how to get rid of them except in a skip :( the wife would like that, although one trader was asking prices like £10.99 for one, 1963 car and car conversions mag, sounds crazy to me and a private seller wanted £100 for a couple of hundred assorted mags and no bids when i looked!!, any ideas, thanks,Doug

I spent a few years selling old mags on eBay, mainly 70s and 80s Autocar, Motor and the like, having bought about a hundred several years ago at a boot sale for about £6. I reckon I probably pulled in about £200 all in all, but it was quite a faff - each mag needed about 20 minutes to scan the cover and write a decent listing with the main contents, then you have to spend more time packaging and posting. That said, some went for crazy money - I used to list all of mine at 99p starting bid with no reserve, and remember getting £25 for a single 1960's issue of CAR, £16 for a copy of VW Driver that had a Golf G60 Limited on the cover (that the current owner of said car won), and I ended up posting mags all over the world.

So, in summary, it's worth a punt if you have the time and inclination, and you should get rid of a fair few. You'll probably be left with some that just won't go but you could always offer them free to local Autoshiters, as I did :D

Most magazines only sell for a few quid, it's the postage that kills them, I only pay up to £2.50 inc postage if i can, the last load of autocar magazines i bought (dating from 1962-75ish) i payed £30 for 130 of them.

Such a shame you dumped a load, I'd would of had them if you aren't to far.

I did not intend trying to sell them here seems a bit cheeky really! , infact i have not even sorted them out which will take ages, as there are some in the loft too now i think about it.

Anyway i take the point about individual sales, it would be a pain in the bum, could be the start of a business though :)

When i have sorted them i will put a list on here just incase they may be of interest to anyone as per the car and car conv, etc., which i have no idea how many remain, as they and the hot car ones were heavy casualties, at the tip!

It may take a few days to sort them out and i'm not trying to rob anyone, but would like the space and i hardly ever read them now. Thanks guys for the replies so far, Doug.

1200 for nothing, which hospital was he living in, or had he been evicted from his house? :o :mind you i had a set of mags, "The history of world war one" complete bar one copy, published in the 1930's, inherited from grandma! and was told they were worth nothing by a dealer.

his wife said they were going to the tip if i didnt collect before xmas

(and it cost 70 quid in petrol to collect, so not exactly free for me to collect)

autofive, yes they were not really free, when the petrol is accounted for.Worth it though i would imagine.

The thing i find confusing about selling stuff on ebay is knowing what to ask, i feel sure my old brochures, ccc's and motor show catalogues, plus the 50's bike mags, would have been worth a few quid, some of the club sites advise on price and they are silly money, it's just a pity that the missus decided that these were the ones she took to the tip!! It's a bit like vinyl records, some are worth a fortune and some little or nothing, when i was a collector i took a load, some rare ,in perfect condition,to a dealer, some had cost me £20 plus each and i was offered a quid each, he was selling similar ones for at least 10 times even 20 times his offer to me :x i told him to sod off.

I'm in the same position at the moment.

I've got 5 or so years of EVO, 20 years of LR and 4x4 mags and various other things to sell on.

I can't be arsed with individual ebay listings either.

That reminds me I have a load of evo and octane, mostly from their 3 for a pound subscription offers which we have taken up dozens of times, always cancelled the standing order, after the 3 copies have been sent to us, then been offered it again a few weeks later. It was getting so embarrassing i pointed it out to one guy who rang me, but he did not seem bothered and asked if i would like another mag at 3 for a quid too :o The worlds gone mad.

Get the interesting articles scanned in and e-mail them to trigger!

That's another thing, the ones you see on ebay sold individually, always list the contents, most seem to be traders, that's why they ask so much, i would not have time for all that or the inclination for that matter. Not if i was getting very little for them, anyway.

During the 70'S/80'S I owned well over 30 cars, i know i must have been mad, the rate i changed them, loosing a fortune in the process, all were sports/ hot hatch cars, you name it , i owned it, I have had my present car over 4 years, after finally seeing sense and avoiding divorce :) .This is the reason i have so many mags ,as pre internet, it was the only way to read road tests , and plan my next purchase the month after the last.

Anybody know what traceable postage for a magazine would be?

There's some sort of discount for ebay listings this weekend.

mags cost about a quid to post 2nd class, and recorded delivery (in the uk) is something like 84p extra
