Hi folks, a friend of mine is building a buggy for off road trialling, and the master cylinder reservoir has gone brittle and a piece broken off.

What we are trying to do, is identify what vehicle it has been taken off.

The vehicle is mostly Land Rover and Range Rover based.

Can anyone help PLEASE????

I'd guess at a BL product, but not 100% sure.

The ally back plate that it's mounted on appears to be original to the master cyl.

Oh yeh, it's a Girling master Cylinder.

It's certainly got us stumped!!

BFO servo looks a little bit like the one on my Volvo 940.

How bout the alloy mounting plate, is that similar to? Because the mounting plate looks original to the master cylinder and hasn't been redirilled to mount it on to it.

They look very similar if they aren't actually the same.

Will look further into that and make some more comparisons.

Thank you.

I seem to recall the Series 1 SD1 had the brake lines coming out on the same side as you have pictured in yours. If it's just the reservoir broken on yours, you may be able to "mix n match".

Glad i seem to have pointed you in the right direction!

That sd1 master looks spot on apart from the ports being on the wrong side.

If its a trialer you coul fit any old master cylinder really, just want the same bore and the pitch for the servo mount bolts to be the same

Right, the master cylinder body is almost identical to the Girling one used for the clutch in B18 engined Amazons. The B20 engined cars went over to cable operation. This is the one SCTSH_ANDY took off, because it was jiggered.

Brookhouse Volvo sell 'em for about £40, with a metric neck so you can screw a recent Sealey bleed kit to 'em. . Your reservoir I have no idea on - apologies.

That reservior is exactly the same as my SD1

Okay, so we now have two vehicles it appeared on. RESTECP!

Your comment came about the same time i added that on earlier SD1s, i think the pipework came out on the same side as the one pictured. Typical BL/ARG penny pinching meant it was slightly cheaper to have a slightly different master cylinder and re-route the brake pipes!

It looks like that cylinder still has the plastic tag on it..........a DECENT factor will be to id the cylinder from the tag number. Master cylinders need not be exclusive to a particular models.

In the way that most babies look like most babies (well they do to me anyway).......most master cyls look like most master cyls!

I still have that minging master cylinder in the garage where the car is kept. Do you want me to send it as datum reference?

If you don't mind, that'd be great.

PM me your details. I'll see what I can do. There's a few sellers on eBay doing them for between £25 and £30. See if it fits first if you like.

I've managed to find an SD1 locally, and it's a scrapper. The owner is happy for us to take the reservoir and try it.

Thanks very much for the offer though.
