Strip down started this morning.. if this car had lived, it would have needed 2x front wheelbearings, 2x front driveshafts, a steering rack and a clutch. All 4 doors and the tailgate have some rot, it needs the sill ends sorting as well. So even before someone robbed the whole interior and the shocks/springs and brake hoses, it wanted work...

It now has no front gear at all. I got that done this morning (while waiting for the vet to ring) and set off a timelapse film on my laptop. Shame I didn't make sure the lappy was plugged in ::) so at about 11.30 it hibernated because of low battery :( but the first hour or so is here (in 3 mins 30 secs of timelapse)

enjoy!

I have a question for you guys if you have a moment.

I am rebuilding a dutton Phaeton later in the year and would like to fit a five speed type 9 box to the 1.3 OHV kent engine to produce a little screamer.

I know it can be done but have no idea which clutch and bellhousing I need, I assume it would be from the 1300 sierra. Can you please tell me if this is right or am I pissing into the wind with this plan?

Thanks in advance.

an ordinary type 9 bellhousing will bolt to your crossflow with no trouble.. for clutch plate you need a 23 spline centre with a 8" outside (I have the QH number somewhere, just not here...) you can fit this inside your crossflow pressure plate. So, the job is possible... but I wouldn't bother. keep your 4 speed! The t9 has the same first 4 as your average ford box, but with a 0.89:1 overdrive top. Not much use if you want a revvy screamer, I'd personally look for a close ratio (2000E) 4 speeder instead. (this is what my tina 2 zetec has fitted...)

Cheers Scary.

I already have a type 9 in the legerra with a spare in the lockup and if I dropped to a 4 speed would always be trying for 5th on the motorway

The 2 litre legerra is quite nice to drive (for a dutton) but the multiple vehicle road tax thing is a bit rough so was only using the 1300 to lower the road tax for six months of the year.

Are you ok if I repeat this info on our club forums as there was someone else looking into the same thing?

PS the film on you tube is cool. I'm actually a bit jealous as I always wanted a sierra 4x4 as a donor for one of my kit projects.

Ended up stripping all that out, to rebuild a gubbed front diff in '96. Ford didn't have service exchanges at the time, so it was a new unit, or a repair kit + labour. The estimate was a grand either way, so for reasons best known to himself, the owner opted for the latter. Good motors to work on, and a hoot to drive when fixed!

One of the options discussed, was a s/h unit: I managed to find a rally place in W.Wales who'd give us some sort of warranty on one of theirs. Owner decided not to go for it; fair enough, he didn't fancy finding out it was a lemon. Ironically, shortly after that job, one of the salesman bought an early XR4x4 from the auctions, to do track days. He lunched the engine at Knockhill...but we knew the front diff was A1!
