HELP!! - Rounded Wheelnut

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi All,

Tried removing the rear wheels on my 944, and it looks like the previous owner has managed to completely round the head on one of the wheel bolts

All the other bolts were pretty stiff, but came free with a bit of gentle persuasion - The bolt heads are recessed into the wheel so no chance of getting mole grips in there. I did wonder about welding a another bolt to the end of the existing one, but I have no welder or welding skillz...any ideas??

HELP!!!

Cheers,

Graham.

Hammer a slightly smaller socket on to it.

You can get sockets that contain hardened internal edges that will bite into the bolt head and grip it.

Take it for a short drive with just that wheel nut on.

Well at least you know if it's worked or not

Where do live Graham? If you're anywhere near here (Chester) I can try and help if you're stuck.

The socket idea is the easiest, i would buy one thats a bit small and just proper welly it on, it will be scrap afterwards llike but at least you'll have the wheel off OK.

Haven't you done something like this yourself?

Thanks for all your help guys...some progress (I think). I tried the small socket trick, which has broken away part of the nut (it seems to be aluminium), just leaving the chamfered part at the base of the nut which holds the wheel in place. Tomorrow I'll jack the car up, remove the other nuts and see if I can free/ breakaway the remaining part of the nut by wiggling the wheel. Failing that I may have to carefully drill into the wide part of the nut on either side in the hope of splitting it off the stud.

Replacement wheel nuts are around a fiver each from Porsche, so not too painful.

All part of the fun

I was going to say they were aluminium, but there ya go. Why not drill through the centre of it? That way the taper comes off, before you have gone near the wheel, and then you can moley the remains off.
