red5 Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 The Fronterror has managed to detonate itself chaps, so am after something for the winter. Pref with MoT but am open to suggestions.
Albert Ross Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 So..... You'll not be driving that during winter then................ What next eh?Any preference? RWD? FWD? 4WD?
red5 Posted November 20, 2010 Author Posted November 20, 2010 Any and everything considered. Dizzler would be cool, doing an extra days commute to work currently, about a 40mile round trip, so decent mpg would be nice. Having said that will stump for something interesting enough. Show me the reasonably priced options !
Cavcraft Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 Hiow much do you want to spend and where abouts are you/how far do you want to travel? My Pisshat dizzler is up for grabs, 50mpg no danger and in daily use but car not exactly perfect.
Pete-M Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 A dead Frontevil? Don't mean to be insensitive, but that's just made my day Can you kill a Vectra next, please?
red5 Posted November 20, 2010 Author Posted November 20, 2010 h do you want to spend and where abouts are you/how far do you want to travel? My Pisshat dizzler is up for grabs, 50mpg no danger and in daily use but car not exactly perfect. In Worcestershire Cav, not afraid of travelling. Explain a bit more. Cheaper the better, around the £500 note mark max, past that I'll buy some decent shite I guess. A dead Frontevil? Don't mean to be insensitive, but that's just made my day Can you kill a Vectra next, please? Doing my best, 1x Fronterror, 2x Vectras so far. Otherwise I'll have to ride the 'crosser to work, which will significantly raise my adrenaline, while shortening live-expectancy. To a matter of some minutes.
Cavcraft Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 *Sorry for going slightly o/t... Pete, have you ever tried a Frontender 2.3 diesel? Holy shit, they take awefulness to a whole new level.
Cavcraft Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 It's past five hundred sovs sorry and it's definately not decent. It's a VW and a Passat, therefore it's a heap of shit.
red5 Posted November 20, 2010 Author Posted November 20, 2010 *Sorry for going slightly o/t... Pete, have you ever tried a Frontender 2.3 diesel? Holy shit, they take awefulness to a whole new level. Worked for Vauxhall for 7 years or so...hateful engine at the best of times. Almost as bad as the 2.2 16vRodthrower.
Pete-M Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 *Sorry for going slightly o/t... Pete, have you ever tried a Frontender 2.3 diesel? Holy shit, they take awefulness to a whole new level. My experience of Fronterrors isn't huge. Drove a 'Sport' dieseasel once, and that was fucking dire. Will that have been the 2.3? My only interest whilst driving it was working out how long before I could get out. Rough is a serious understatement. I think Avis had a couple when I worked for them, but I avoided driving them any further than around the car park, Also drove an M reg LWB 2.4? Petrol one when it was new. My brother brought it home when he'd blagged it from somewhere to see if he liked it. He didn't. He thought there had to be something wrong with it as surely it wasn't meant to be that bad, so brought it to me to see if I could find the problem. It only had 1000 miles or so on the clock, but even so I took it to my mates MOT station to find out what was hanging off / bent / missing. As it drove slightly better than the 'Sport' and the bits underneath appeared to be complete and in order it turned out that they were actually meant to be like that. Vauxhall couldn't find anything wrong with it, and said that it was actually a nice one. Shame really, as it was quite a nice looking thing. Certainly better looking than a Nissan / Ford Cilla*, it was just hideously bad to be in / drive. *Tara Now.
Guest Leonard Hatred Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Are they that bad? IIRC the early ones had rear leafs, later ones had coils. I've been toying with buying a Frontera pick-up (Isuzu KB, TF, whatever they were calling it in x year)
garethj Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I've recently been in the market for a £500 car and ended up with a £400 Volvo 740. Older ones are pre-cat so no expensive emissions stuff to worry about. Economy is about 23mpg around town and 27mpg on a nice run, 30+ if you keep to 60mph Honourable mention to a Pug 205, if I could have found one nice enough in a spec I liked, I'd have got one. Peter showed that you can get a nice C class Merc for that money, but they're more common for £650+ I reckon. Economy isn't great either. Late 1980s Passat / Scirocco / Golf / Jetta / Polo can be economical and tough as long as the head gasket hasn't gone and it's not fake rusty with pineapples on the wonky roofrack. Anything other than the 16V engines should give 40+mpg without trying too hard Micra? Little Daihatsu?
red5 Posted November 21, 2010 Author Posted November 21, 2010 Got my eye on a 205 Rallye (uk) at the moment, am quite tempted by a Micra though - the old dear had one for years - top motor and ran on feck all. VW stuff is tempting - trying to avoid the whole ratlooksceneshite is hard mind. Feel free to link anything tbh. Ref Frontera odd handing - the 95 models went to coils to address that problem specifically. Mostly worked. Ish. Would still have another, but def not that ancient 2.3CF refugee. Usually avoided Ovlovs because of the stereotypically 'didn't see you mate' bike attitude, but a comfy fat estate is tempting...
Cavcraft Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Are they that bad? IIRC the early ones had rear leafs, later ones had coils. I've been toying with buying a Frontera pick-up (Isuzu KB, TF, whatever they were calling it in x year) I quite like the early 2.0 Sport ones, pretty damned basic but had a certain sort of shit charm to them, seemed easy to work on and were actually pretty solid. I don't know if they are much fun to drive on a long run, probably not, but twatting about locally and off-roading in them is not that bad. Having had a very limited experieince of old 'series' Landrovers (and I feel a flaming coming on here) the Sport just seemed to be a slightly more modern (dare I say better?) and more comfortable place to be, but still had that sort of cruddy charm. The 2.4s seemed to be racked with faults as Pete says, fuel lines and tanks being a pretty big one. Don't like the 2.2 engines so no intention of having one if I can help it. 2.3 appalling bad, 2.5 pretty good but the later 2.8s are the ones to have apparantly.
Cavcraft Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 AlexG's Corsa? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2000-VAUXHALL-COR ... 2eb163600c
red5 Posted November 21, 2010 Author Posted November 21, 2010 AlexG's Corsa? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2000-VAUXHALL-COR ... 2eb163600c Still available ? Any idea what reserve is/was? Paging AlexG !
garethj Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Got my eye on a 205 Rallye (uk) at the momentI saw one on RetroRides but most 205s were just a dealer sticker pack on a 1.4 litre XS (or something like that, not the whizzbang motor with loads of carbs anyway)VW stuff is tempting - trying to avoid the whole ratlooksceneshite is hard mind. Feel free to link anything tbh.Yes, a good car owned by a wanker turns into a bad car quickly.Usually avoided Ovlovs because of the stereotypically 'didn't see you mate' bike attitude, but a comfy fat estate is tempting...As a biker myself I can sympathise, but I found it's a good old car for the money. Tough, warm, roomy and an icon amongst antique dealers
Alexg Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 AlexG's Corsa? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2000-VAUXHALL-COR ... 2eb163600c Still available ? Any idea what reserve is/was? Paging AlexG ! Sorry mate- Sold within a few hours! What are you after ideally - I get a few cheap motors offered now and then.
red5 Posted November 22, 2010 Author Posted November 22, 2010 Something derv powered would be good, or interesting enough that I don't mind the mpg (or lack of) ! Cheers, Sam
red5 Posted December 2, 2010 Author Posted December 2, 2010 I have mostly bought another Fronterror. On the basis that I'm going to get in quick before the ZomgSnowBuyA4wd muppets send the prices even higher. A lwb 2.3 AllegedlyTurbo diesel. In true AS style i got 8 miles from vendors house before it died in h20 vapour glory. Quite impressive amount of steam from, well, everywhere it seems. Nice work.
Cavcraft Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Top work We should start some sort of Shite bingo on here, that's a Vectra and a Frontender 2.3 diesel in one week. I only need Renault Laguna automatic for the house.
AnthonyG Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Did you take it back or are you going to persevere with it red5?
red5 Posted December 3, 2010 Author Posted December 3, 2010 Persevered, new belt, anti-freeze and oil. Now has more go and less smoke. Not much more mind. And the o/s/f window fell into door. Turns out the fuel gauge sticks in the last 1/4 of the scale. Bah. Much hilarity with 15 year old lift pumps and so on. Brake cleaner is your friend here. On the plus side, found a 12CD JVC changer under the drivers seat. Which works. All 12 slots. Win. Sam
Geep Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Nice to see you've stuck to the Fronty theme My own sport is resting outside under his snowy hat waiting for some staff to turn up at the mot centre one day.
