It's a 604 STi (indeed).

Yes, I've just got rid of something with shagged sills and I'm considering buying something with shagged sills and unobtanium bits.

Arghh. I don't know what to do. The SD1 has now left the building, I've found a 604 for sale, I've never had a 604, and it'd be another one off the list of things I've always wanted to own. As there are only 12 604s on the road in the UK, I'm not likely to find another in a hurry.

I must admit I've never owned a 604 (but I have had the odd STi... :( )

Don't these have unobtainable TRX wheels?

It does indeed have TRX wheels. I like TRX wheels.

It's not this one by any chance?

Spotted by binhoker and myself in Leeds..

Ah, I should go and look if that one is still there.. It shares it's drive with a Toyota Crown, an XJ and a rather decrepit 504 Estate.

re the wheels, I have a spare set of 15" ones in the garage

they look the same as the metric wheels but tyres are much cheaper

I might be pursuaded to flog them

re the sills, because the outer cover is not structural you can make new ones out of galvanized steel (or even stainless) and just screw them on. That's what mine has and my MOT tester is strict but has no problem with it. All you need is some steel sheet and bending machine, a drill and some screws, no welding required I even have the drawings somewhere that the previous owner gave to some metal guy to get new ones made

obviously the structural bit underneath has to be solid but it doesn't matter what it looks like because of the sill covers...

I asked the chap to send me some photos, and unfortunately, this is how he sent 'em. I'm still interested, but it looks like a bit of work.

the most important thing is that the panels are okay because you have to go to france to get them and I don't think they'll be cheap, and then you have to get them sprayed

mine has rotten door frames and it'll be expensive to fix

The outer sill covers are an easy fix because you can get them knocked up yourself and spray them off the car with rattle cans and screw them on

It's what's behind that that counts

my experience has been getting them resprayed costs more than welding because they are metallic and so you have to respray the whole side of the car

so if it's only hidden bits that need welding it'll be cheaper

Mine is also going to need surgery to the A pillars which is going to be interesting

Took today off work, borrowed a nice, economical Skoda, all ready to go to Suffolk to have a look and I've decided I'm not gonna do it.

I'd be mad taking on another project right now. The Escort has been 20 months or so, and still isn't finished, the Jag is a bloody good car, and I've just sold the SD1 (To Bren, who's a new recruit to our happy little gang on 'ere) because I didn't have time to get that sorted, and the SD1 needed less work than this 604 is likely to.

I know I'll probably regret not buying it, as I'm unlikely to find another in the UK, but I allotted a grand to get it bought and MOT'd and it's already over that before I've even seen it.

Many apologies to Phil DNJ who's been a huge help with info about 604s, but in Dragon's Den stylee "I'm out".

you will find another, you but you could have a long wait

when I bought mine another one came up three weeks later which would probably have been a better buy, but then I didn't see another for two years.

I've also been looking at turbocharging the V6. As loads of R25 turbos have died for their gearboxes I wonder how hard it would be to find an engine from one.

Some of the Kit Car brigade are using the engine as well. A lot of the 25 V6 Turbo engines have been snapped up by Alpine GTA owners as well. There will be some lurking no doubt but they are a rare breed nowadays.

Oh and the Alpine A610 was 250 BHP

How about a Citroen or Peugeot 3.0 24V lump?

Looking at the fungus on the steering wheel, I don't give the shell too much in the way of life-chances in that damp cave... :?

I hung up a steering wheel of an old Passat in my garage which is quite dry. Within a few months it looked like that.

It might just be sweat thats soaked into the plastic or something

604s normally rot at the bottom of the windscreen in the A pillars. The paint starts to buble and lift. No sign of it on that one

Also it has the 14" Amil alloys which are the shitest alloys that you can get on a 604 and they take cheap tyres too

Weird that, VWs seem to suffer from 'mouldywheel' when they're parked up. I've had a few that have done it in a matter or weeks.

Shiply appear to have sorted my transport issues for the other one, but I still need to go and see the bloody thing first....
