240 abuse

I'm busy adjusting to my new life. Gone are my 1200 miles a week and also gone is the cash flow that allowed me to indulge my tin disorder. Economic reality hits and with it affection for the 240.

My new commute is a 30 mile round trip from Edinburgh, across the Forth Bridge to Dalgety Bay. The vehicle of choice is the 240 Torslanda which is in bad need of a service which I can't really afford just now.

I've done the following since buying the car:

new headlight reflectors - these ALWAYS go on the 240 after about 10 years and its an easy job to replace them with new aftermarket bowls.

new antenna - £40 quid from volvo - theives

I've also been round the car touching up the stone chips etc

However there are several mechanical issues - firstly the wishbone bush is shot on the nearside front - an easy job but tricky and tough to get right without a ram - the excellent Mike Brace guru of all tings 240 related and owner of Classic Swede in Anglesey has posted a solution on the Volvo forum using a large vice to push the bush out - however it is still a pig of a job so I will keep the speed down and when I have some readies, outsource the problem,

The second issue is the car seems to be overfuelling - the lamda light is on and I suspect the O2 sensor is playing up - car is lumpy until warm and can stall on you when cold - I think that there might be too much fuel being dumped in by the ECU - I might go over the sensors with Electrical contact cleanser - fortunately new bits for a 240 aren't too bad - unlike later Volvos

in the meantime, being a 240, it keeps going

slow

bargelike

unfashionable

but

tough as old boots and in my current poverty a bonus!

I have always wanted a 240 estate, (GLT would be nice!)... you are lucky,.... a sherpa and a 240!! We have a nice v70 for the long hauls but you cant beat a good old volvo, thay will go on for ever!! with a little TLC of course!

Yes the 240 is a cracking car. Id love an F plate GLT estate in black, with the vulgar dark beige leather interior colour combo. Lush 8)

"It's the model made before catalytic converters so it runs good on regular gas..."

It's before the age when cats were fitted - my prime reason for buying it as the S80 still has its engine management light on

T'wife's Avensis does that - code reader suggests "P0430 Bank 2 cat not operating at maximum efficiency". Fugger has 3 cats in total, as well (plus 4 O2 sensors - changed all of those at a total cost of £250). Still, it passed the MOT emissions test OK - with the light on (sole advisory on that) so it can stay like that as far as I'm concerned, particularly as (according to the Toyota forums) the official dealership approach is to change all 3 cats and the ECU at a cost of £2k or so...

Scooters - can you interrogate the engine light at all? There won't be an OBD port but might be some socket you can bridge pins on...

I spotted a green Torslanda in the BP garage the other day, would that have been you?

Mines a white un.

Will check the error code from the evidence.
