Ok, I don't know if the search function here si just rubbish or loads of threads have gone missing, but I can't find the 'daft question amnesty' thread from a couple of months back, and I thought of a really good one the other day

why do we use the term 'mark' to differentiate between versions of cars(and pretty much everything else)?

I'm sure there must be an obvious answer but I cant for the life of me work out what it might be...

search is rubbish, better results come from typing your query into google along with autoshite.

It comes from the old english for "boundary" and has been used since elizabethan times as a synonym for version.

If I bought a dictionary and a great big bee and a fish came out of it, I'd be furious.

The Muppet dictionary, I hear that there's not much of a plot to it and that the film was released straight to video.

It's funny how the lesser manufacturers had marks and the posher or less common cars had series or phases. Even though the mark/series/phase system isn't always officially the manufacturers system most people seem to know (mostly) which model is been referred to, though some of them take a bit of thought.
