Quickie...

I saw this old Land Rover, fancied another one to take to bits and (fail to) reassemble...

Now I have no fears that the vehicle itself is 'dodgy', I mean it's a bit of an old shitter not worth the bother of nicking etc.

But I am under no illusion that the VIN plate that until recently graced it's dash and the registration plates are now firmly screwed to a 'tax-free' defender.

Is it even possible for this to go back on the road, and if so, could it still be eligible for free tax, as it is quite clearly manufactured prior to 1973.

I think that with no proof of the vehicles origins the DVLA may refuse to register it at all!

Do a reversal of the usual situation, bolt on the identity of a brand new Defender and cruise around on a swanky 60-plate.

slap the body on a rover p4, lowering it so much its unusable

oh wait..................

To my eye that looks like a basically unmessed about with old Land Rover. To register it I think it would need an inspection at which time if the build date can be proven then it ought to get given a non transferable age related plate. If there's no ID on it then maybe date codes on parts can be used as proof of age? Worth enquiring with the ACE guys for a definitive answer I'd have thought.

I'd guess that presenting that for inspection would open up a can of fucking anacondas, let alone worms! First, they are going to want a receipt showing it was legally purchaced. Then, if it still has an engine number, they can track what vehicle it is supposed to be.... then, the record for that vehicle can be accessed, and if it is suddenly a 200TDI disco and taxed, someone is going to get pulled and bum-raped, and you get the ID back. While they are doing the inevitable, you probably get an age related plate. If it has no engine number, or the number doesn't match a vehicle (ie scrapped out or pre computer) you will get a new vin and a Q plate (probably...) and the guy who sold you it will get followed by the vehicle crime squad for a while.

I say DOOOOO EEEEEET!

The chassis number is on the outer face of the offside front dumb iron, unless it has been replaced or plated over (If plated, that can be removed) Giving you a number. Expect it to start 241 for a petrol, or 271 for a diesel. The grille is incorrect, as it would have been produced after 1971. The rest of the vehicle appears to be pre 71. Certainly post-'66, as the neg earth arrangement and flat heater showed their faces after then. Black dash and single wiper give this away quite well. Expect to see a G as the chassis suffix. This was built between November 1968 and July 1971. I have a gut feeling of mid -69. I suggest a number around 24133500G to 24136000G. But that's without looking at it. It needs front drive flanges and bolts,,, the FWH have been nicked!

It's a bit of a "Trigger's broom" already.Series 3 wings and grill on a series 2a.The dumb irons (looking at the rest of it) will have been plated over by now.Probably always been a civilian car as I seen to recall military spec had the fuel filler under the seat squab at that time.

Looks quite nice but pretty buggered. The Series 2 Club could sort out the registration for you but it could be a real pain in the arse - and at £122 already it is getting close to what I would want to pay for a rotten petrol 88 with no ID.

I know of a few in better nick for non-stupid money if you fancy one, drop me a PM :)

the BMH museum at gaydon can get you a build certificate from a chassis number. these can be used to obtain date specific plates.

If you managed to determine its identity what are the implications for the Defender that is currently wearing its identy?

A V5'n'VIN from a later one (say '73-76) for 20 quid would be the easiest route. Who gives a fuck anyway - it's an old green Landeh.

Thank's Albert,I didn't know those wings were fitted to series 2's.I had a '66 series 2a many years ago with the lights in the grill and the thin lipped bonnet. The '71 series 3 I owned afterwards looked the same at the front as that one listed.I always assumed people changed the wings for better lighting.

Razor edge bonnet was standfard fit on 88s until about 1976ish. Deluxe bonnet was fitted to all 109s as standard. Dished with wheel mounts were a pricey option.

Would a diesel S2 with lots of bits and a solid chassis/bulkhead float your boat? 1962, Safari roof, good oily bits but been stood for a while. Upper end of your budget but it's a nice one and fairly local (Essex)

If you do have the chassis number stamped on the vehicle then download a V62 (or get one from a post office).

Fill in all the relevant details and sit back while the DVLA grant you your old ID back and probably prosecute the bloke that is effectively driving an uninsured ringer.

Have no doubt that they are well aware of this paticular scam and are acting on all the cases reported to them.

We have the same issue with people using old Dutton tags on nice shiny new kits to dodge the SVA/IVA, they are on to that as well.

If you are aware of anyone who may be driving such a vehicle (newer vehicle on an old VIN) tell them that the DVLA reaper is after them.

Normal course of events is, arrest, car crushed, prison...

I had this shit years ago with a Mk1 Cooper S. Too many cars, not enough time so I chucked a few in Auto Trader to get shut. Mini sold straight away as expected. Few days later I get a call off some lad. "That Mini, whats the reg number?" So I told him. "Thats my brothers car" "Oh, was it?" I replied. "No, it IS my brothers car and it's sitting in his garage". Transpired he'd had the car "reshelled" into a secondhand shell but didn't dispose of the old shell, which had a stick on reg plate on the bonnet. Someone applied for a V5 and got it and somewhere down the line I bought it. 2 cars, 2 registered keepers, 1 registration number.

Next thing is the brother called me telling me I couldn't sell the car (that I'd already sold) and I had to scrap it. Because of his shitty attitude I told him that the reg belongs to the shell and as I had a rolling shell with those numbers on and he had a secondhand shell, he'd end up with a Q plate if he carried on being an arse. He got even more shitty so he got the Q plate.
