Apologies if this topic has been covered before but has anybody else received a new V5C with the red section across the front with "this document is not proof of ownership" across the middle ?

Just got mine for the Dutton and I've not seen one like that before.

The other half got hers for the latest purchase the other day.weird init !

Just posted my old one off to notify of engine change, so I'll get a new one soon.

Biggest change as far as I'm aware is the removal of the "scrapped" box.

Yes, I've just received my new documents for my Citroen; the weird thing is that although I'm apparently NOT the owner, I AM liable for any taxes and costs associated with it. All of the nasty stuff and none of the fun, eh?

Think they came out 1st of August.I've had three so far and yes there is no "scrapped" box.It has to go to an authorised treatment facility (scrapyard) and the scrapyard will give you a certificate of destruction. If they don't then fill in the trade section and send that off.

I wonder what does count as proof of ownership?

Positive ebay feedback from the previous owner.

The V5 has always carried a warning saying it's not proof of ownership. That's why it registers keepers, not owners.

So if any of my motor get nicked, I can't lay a claim on it, as i'm not legally the owner? Bollocks... If any fucker helps themselves to my shit, they get their fucking legs broken. And that includes Government operatives etc.

Ownership is a far more complex issue than keeper. Ownership rights are set down in 1000 years of common law, keeper is just the person DVLA fine if they use your sorn declaration as roach "by accident" or at least, that's how it SHOULD be. Unfortunatly though, some people (including some who wear pointy hats) think the two are one and the same.

Case in point... I bought a (totally fucked) 240z from a senile guy who was selling up his house and moving to a care home. The datto had been in his garage so long the roof had fallen on it, and unsurprisingly he couldn't remember what a v5 is, let alone where it was. Keys, he did have, both for the garage and the car. I took it to my yard, did some basic identity checks with the police (DVLA were no use - the private plate on the car is now on a porsche) and it came back as not stolen, so after about 6 weeks I bunged it on ebay, stating clearly that there was no V5 and why. The day after the auction finished (at £560) plod turned up, and arrested me for TWOC. Turns out that someone with a V5 for a car they abandoned in a father of a friend's garage after plate raping it 15 years ago went into a police station and reported it stolen. I did manage to escape prosecution (because the old guy's neighbour backed up my good faith story) but they impounded the car from my yard while I was in custody, and then gave it to the guy who had the v5. Bastards still have my DNA on file too.

Oh yeah, and the no scrapped box? easy fix for that one... Simply fill in the following new keeper details and bung your V5 in the nearest post box.

Don't forget to address the envelope to the usual DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA address.. I bet they manage to register several thousand cars to their own chief exec before someone notices ;)

Thats a class idea SOC, what could the punishment be if they wanted to "do" you though? There wouldn't be any proof that you hadn't sold the car to someone who gave that name and address, would there?

Imagine several thousand SORN fines!

well, seeing as there is no requirement on the seller to check the identity of the buyer, and the car isn't in your posession anymore if they come round to check I don't see what they could do. If you insist that that is the name and address you were given when the transfer took place it's going to be hard to prove in court.
