Non shite (or maybe shite) Megane II question

A girl at work is on about getting a Megane 2 on a 1.9 dizzler with about 70k on it.

Questions is should she? Are there any major problems with these or should she try and get something else (she is a 22yr old lass, so no Korean tin etc will be 'cool' enough....)

I suspect the engine should be fine if it is looked after as I assume its the same as the 195k one in my Scenic but I know nothing about these cars except that i quite like their styling.

Renault+diesel=run like fuck in the opposite direction. Sorry that's not much help but they do have a terrible reputation.

Do they? Did not know that. I have been fine (touchwood) but I might just have been lucky with mine but have not had it long I suppose.

She will probably be going for one with a few miles on it too (nowt excessive though). I would have thought with it being a Renault it would be other things that were big worries rather than the engine on one, as my experience of French cars is that minor repairs are expensive because they are awkward to work on and cost a lot to get repaired.

Are the petrol ones okay? Could maybe coax her in the direction of them if the diesels are that bad.

Meganes don't seem too bad tbh. Its the Laguna you need to worry about.

I have a mate with a diesel Megane and he does fairly big miles but its been ok, no real problems at all. Probably no worse than similar cars. Not all Renaults are trouble although I'd be big time wary of Lagunas.

I'd quite fancy a Megane myself, Not so much a hatchback as i don't like the styling from the rear but a nice 1.9 DCI 120 Estate would be good.

I had a mate who had a 120k 1.9 DCi on a 04 plate a couple of years ago and he had no problems with his until he lost the key card...

My sister had a Meg 2, with no real trouble, apart from the rapid wear front suspension and steering gear. Maybe it's the way we drive, but apparently Renault original wheelbearings are made of plastic.

I'll agree that it's the little things which get out of hand - like dismantling the front bumper and more, to replace the washer bottle. The sunroof and scuttle drain pipes which clog up constantly... It seems to be a case of getting a good, sorted one with plenty of service history, anything else is a gamble.

Having said that, I wouldn't say no to one myself.

I have 2 Renault diesels, one has just turned 182k and the other has 317k on it. Neither engine has been apart or had anything other than servicing.

Cool, ta for the advice.

She will probably not buy one now though.....
