VAG-COM help?

Recommended Posts

I've got the new engine in the Golf, but it's idling at 1400rpm and it's really lumpy to drive. Apparently it needs a damn good resetting via VAG-COM - I don't suppose anyone in the east midlands has a unit kicking around that they could spare for ten minutes, in exchange for money/beer/filthy mags?

I've got one of those cheap-ish eBaY jobs which I could post to you to borrow if any good?

Do they do the same job? I thought someone on here reckoned that some VAG stuff will only talk to VAGCOM, not generic readers. It's a pre-OBD car.

I'll keep you in mind though, cheers fella!!

Is your Golf a PD diesel?, I've not been that impressed with my Bora since I've bought it, It seems to use a lot more fuel then my Passat did, and when sitting in traffic on idle it will start to rev up on its own and then the car starts to vibrate and shake.

Just wondering if it needs pluging into a box to reset something or is it just shit?.

No, it's a 2.0 8v petrol but the same might apply.... just mine's too old to have a spanner light or anything!

Pillock are you in Notts? If so I know a VAG tech with it who is very good I can post up his contact details if you wish?

Have you tried unplugging the MAF sensor as this can cause over fuelling, if it improves when unplugged you need a new MAF. Also has the cambelt been done, and has it been serviced recently?

Akron.... yeah, I'm north Notts - that would be cool if you could!

It's a replacement engine, it's just had all new belts/tensioner/filters/plugs yada yada..... also a new coil as the old one was allegedly causing a misfire. Not tried the MAF but now you mention it, it's the same symptoms as a buggered MAF on my old Zetec Mondeo. I'll try that tomorrow on the way to work (nothing like turning up in a shirt and tie, with oily hands)

I can't moan too much, and I don't want to tamper with it too much, as when it's accelerating it's like a scalded cat - so much faster than before. 5000rpm before was wheezy and gutless, now it's going past 6000rpm and asking for more. Just driving in town is soooooo tiring.

Cheers, I'll give em a bell this week and see how much it's going to set me back. If it's too much I might try Cavette's FCR first but I know pre-95 cars are an arse to read properly.

Thanks everyone :D

I might try that then, Where is the MAF sensor or would i be better off looking in my Haynes manual?. Will it still run ok unplugged (I know nothing about MAF sensors!).

Overfueling could well be the problem though, It's done 120k now. (it's 2002 Bora TDi 130 btw)

I've changed the fuel filter, the garage i bought it from said they changed the oil and I'll checked the air filter which was ok, The cambelt was changed about 50k ago i think.

MAF sensor is usually a metal block partway up the air intake, with a 2/3/4-wire plug coming off it. It's in such a place that all the cold air coming into the engine (i.e. after the filter, before the throttle body) has to pass through it.

Edit: halfway down here

It's for a Cupra, but still the 130 TDI PD WOTSIT.

I know what you mean now, I'll try unplugging it, also (sorry to hijack your thread Pillock) but does anyone know if the turbos are normally quite loud on these Golfs/Boras?, Mine has a real suck, whoosh sound to it unlike my Passat plus the big metal pipe into the turbo keeps pushing itself out, it's stillm noisy when i push it back in though.

Bloody cars. :(

Go right ahead, my query has been answered so you can have this secondhand thread :)

My only experience of a TDi Golf was a mental daft chipped one that used to eat clutches, yes that was noisy but I don't know how much boost it was running to push 195bhp..... when you say it pushes the pipe out, this is on the low pressure side? That's odd.....

Trigger, we use Vag Com at work quite a bit, it wouldn't be a problem to borrow it to plug into your Bora.

Thanks for the offer John :D I took some photos of the turbo pipe the other night just before the site died, Could this be part of the reason for the loud turbo and crap MPG? the pip isn't totally out but it doesn't stay in niether.

I haven't got round to cleaning the MAF sensor yet but I'm guessing that this is it.

Yes, that's a turbo pipe and looking at the crap on the brake master cylinder, it's leaking. It will fuel for the measured amount of air entering the engine, so if it's leaking the boosted air there'll be too much fuel and the economy will drop and it will be noisier.

The second picture shows the airflow sensor. On some ECUs, Vag Com can measure actual and specified airflow values on a test drive, this will usually show a faulty sensor. VW do them exchange for around £70.

I'll have to see if there is anyway i can get that pipe to hold in there then, I might be the reason it's so juicy.

You may be able to get replacement clips from VW / Audi / SEAT / Skoda as they are well known for being shite, if not it might be a new pipe, sorting that should solve your problems.
