Spotted in Southern Europe.

I spend a lot of time in Southern Europe where sunshine, no snow  (ie no salt), locals who have no interest in “old bangers” use classics as everyday transport. What’s not to like 😛

Anything big enough to sleep in is a premium as it can double up as a weekend (or full time) home / summer house / guest house / huffy bed / WFH office.

The bigger the better, running gear, paperwork, mot inspection all optional.

Overflow post as some photos went over the forum limit.

A neighboring car club had a stand at a local race track when I went for a long weekend. They approved of my pre-2000 cars so they fed me beer & buffet then added me to their mailing list.

Photos from them :

This often parks up by the local beach and seems genuine - I saw similar in Scandanavia (the same parking spot often has a classic Merc convertible - owner often leaves the keys in that

Every year the county hold their version of the Paris - Dakar. Seeing these monsters drive through the city street to parc ferme at the end of day is unforgettable.

All driving un-chapparoned, they always get right of way at junctions🤪

Tat I’ve looked at and / or brought home with me.

First up, Alfa 145, shabby daily but great handling. Needed a headgasket but the boxer motor got 2. My daily for 2 years.

Golf2, bought for less than scrap as a quick fix (as the parts for the Alfa took a while to find). It needed a headgasket and a weeks deep cleaning! Used as a daily for 2 years then sold as a restored classic.

My long term project. Not enough space here to say what I think about the seller ! Note my new front floorpans and his plate steel rears. Floors are now all new and fully welded, almost roadworthy.., Patina is staying at least until it passes inspection.

Summer fun toy, bought for scrap as it smoked badly and muppet owner had cut all the wires under the bonnet,

Tip: don’t ever buy a 2.1D Renault, it’s a sleeved down 2.8d and you can’t pass the rods up through the bores !! Creative keyhole surgery from below was needed to fit new piston rings. Sold as a fun summer toy to to a nice couple who love it.

Another freebie, it even got delivered for free ! Blown headgasket (pig of a job as the body shell / dashboard is just inches above the engine - need to drop complete front subframe, suspension … so garages won’t take it on). Aux belt is so close to the inner wing you need to jack the engine up to give clearance to swap the aux belt - crazy. Now fixed and almost ready for inspection.

Bought for less than scrap value  as it needed a headgasket & steering rack. Now done, passed inspection last week and driving nice.

Targa convertible Nissan 100NX. This turned as a freebie from someone who owed me a favour. 1 owner from new, immaculate interior, stored in a garage for the last 20 years. A new battery & tyres and it passed inspection / mot. Free’ing the almost seized front calipers made it safe. My daily for at least a year, now for sale and a keen chap is coming on Tuesday.

The latest project and a "Before" photo. 1.4 Puma. Drives nice but has been lowered and crashes hard over bumps, shabby interior, lots of dented panels. Tickover was very uneven but has cleared up nice (carb cleaner, + toothbrush for the car, beers for me)

One that didn’t follow me home but it was cheap (and negotiable ) for a tidy non-rusty Cav convertible. Downside is it’s been in Europe a long time - by rights should have been officially imported. I don’t know the implications so I left it.

Too much tat, not enough hours in the day.

These were taken in Athens, went for World Cup games against Greece last year - proceeded to spend most of my time staring at cars going by. Got a few photos of some…
