just booked my flight from Edinburgh to newquay on Monday to collect the Sherpa - the vendor is kindly collecting me from the airport - I'll be driving it back to firstly Hertfordshire on Monday and then Edinburgh on Thursday - can't wait -

I think I will pack a saucepan and a tin of beans and a few t bags to save on Motorway grub on the way home

rossco dug up an old shed of the Week article on this van on Pistonheads - all the work quoted has been sorted out apparantly

If you're stuck/broken down/fancy a pint/want to break your journey/have your purchase admired etc., give me a PM, as I'm in Hertfordshire! Sounds like a good one!

Fancy smuggling back some cider/ice cream/pasties from sunny Cornwall?

Excellent go for it man! I did a Glasgow- Camborne - Glasgow trip to collect my ebay BX. Edinburgh airport flyBE to Newquay, a series of little buses and a train to Cambourne and then got picked up at the station in the owner's Austin A7! got the BX, drove to filling station then on to a mate in Dorset for bed and board then journey back to Glasgow the following morning in a bought blind 25 year old BX! not a hint of a problem!

I'd do it again too - nothing like driving the length of Britain in a 25 year old shite heap for the sake of it

That'll be a horrible journey in a draughty old heap that rattles like hell and has greasy plastic seats that smell of cabbage. But I guess we all have to fly sometimes 8)

Sherpa looks very, very cool - drop by if you're passing Richmond so I can share the joy :D

Sounds like a good trip, and a good call on self-sufficiency vs motorway services.

I'll keep a lookout for you next Thu', so if some random supermarket motor flashes you, it'll probly be me. Take care, and good luck.

I like that idea! How about, instead of packing your supplies, dropping into Asda or Tesco as you pass and hitting their Value shelves? You'll get everything you could need, for shite money, including pans and tin openers. Then you're equipped, without breaking up the kitchen. Remind me to tell the tale of Inverness-Manchester, April 09....

While we're here... Inverness-Manchester, April 2009.

I was in Inverness to see the grandchildren, and we left our car for our daughter to pass on to her in-laws. We had to get to Manchester to fly to Atlanta for a two-week vacation, before coming here to Cyprus. Ideal way to pass the time while your container is at sea, with all your furnishings and stuff. I checked out my options and decided the best thing was to rent a car one-way, from airport to airport, so I booked a basic car, Fiesta or similar. I rolled up to the desk at Inverness airport.

"Yes sir, the car you will be taking to Manchester is a Land-Rover Defender.." Now I thought he said Freelander, and was congratulating myself on a nice upgrade, then the penny dropped.

"You did just say Defender?"

"Yes sir, a four-door station wagon." Holy moly, a MAN's Land-Rover! I couldn't sign up quick enough.

Mrs Ramrod had waited with our car in a convenient layby, expecting me to come past in a nice little Fiesta... I pulled up beside her in this huge navy blue military minibus! I swear she nearly had a kitten! So we drove to Manchester for a pre-flight night in an airport hotel, in an 08-plate 110 TD station wagon. What a barrel of fun that was! Not the most economical way to make the trip, nor the most comfortable, but at least I had no worries about where I was going to put the cases.
