Volvo V50

not often I recommend a modern car - as I drove home in the Daf on Thursday I needed a car to get me down south this week so I got my company to hire me one - usually I get an Insignia or somthing as horrible - this time I got a V50 Diesel Turbo DrivE - the extra economical version - and what an excellent car it is - I got 50 MPG at 75/80 today over the 400 miles - car has decent ommph but better than that is comfortable, handles superbly and is very cleverly put together with no compromises on safety etc -

I want one as a daily but lack the funds!!!

I drove a new S60R (i think) a year or so back and was very pleasantly surprised. Massively quick, smooth and a nice place to be in to cover a lot of miles.

I have to say i quite like the relative conseratively styled Volvo range, the 4WD stuff aside, the lower models look quite good. I also find it odd that this model is always being put down as a glorifed Ford Focus, but isn't that supposed to be a good car? Mazdas are largely Ford based but seldom get the grief for it - I suppose Volvo were once a fiercely independent company with a traditional 'homegrown' identity, so maybe thats where this bad press comes from. V50's depriciate fairly quickly, so I think a 3 year old example could be tremendous value for money.

I'm a little out of touch with the Volvo range at the moment - is that the 1.6 engine or have they done the drivE stuff on 2.0 and 5-pots as well?

I'm really going to have to change the daily (although the old man went over to the house to check things out recently and it fired up without hesitation - expected a flat battery at the very least) this year and if common sense prevails, I'll probabaly get a Volvo. Either a C30 D5 (if the wife is too involved), or a diesel V50 pr V70 if I'm having a sensible day, or if common sense takes a dash out the side door, a T6 XC90 off of Ebay from a dodgy guy with a Lithuanian accent and a worrying need to get the deal done. Or a S320cdi. Or a 51 reg 740i in green with nice wheels. Or a Mazzer 4P - here we go...

CT, they do an XC90 with a V8 too

My Jag gets better mpg than that 4.4 lump. I had a test drive in an S80 V8 and wasn't that impressed to be honest.

I have to be careful here - I am definitely capable of walking into a showroom to buy an 1.6d and arriving home in a 4.4 V8. I can go from 60mpg to 18 mpg with one shrug of the shoulders.

I once won a cheap Merc 300TD estate on Ebay, paid for it, went to pick it up and came away with an older and high mileage 528 touring instead. Vendor couldn't believe his luck as he had been listing the BMW for ages without a single bidder; relisted the merc later and got over double what I won it for.

Same here. I love the Volvo V50s. I used a 55-plate 2.0 SE Sport Diesel as a company pool car. Dark metallic Blue with 17" Volvo cross-spoke alloys. I Loved it to bits. It looked great, handled well, was economical and the interior (Full cream leather seats) was just a nice place to be. I dont say that about many cars.

I did express huge interest in it, but then lack of funds and subsequent loss of job put paid to that  Its one car I do miss and still admire.

Cant see myself owning one/or anything as nice for looooong time............

well obviously there is no comparing the V50 with the legendary 200 - I love 200's more than I love beer
