morning all,

well well well,

currently sitting in the orfice in St Albans and this afternoon I will be driving back to Edinburgh....in the Daf 44

leaving the BMW in the south for a month now

wish me luck!

no fuel gauge and peeing oil (1/2lt every 200 miles or so)

but confident the aircoled tart rattler will get me home in one piece!

I have treated her to a hand wash in the car park this am.

I will be posting some photos of her this weekend - I have finally got my camera working properly!

you're a brave man - once drove my schmitt from Stirling to Coventry ... and an NSU Prinz 4 from Stirling to the south coast

well - the heavens have opened and there is torrential rain - I mean torrential in St Albans - I'll give it an hour but if this keeps up I will be in the E34

It's stopped raining here now, so you might be OK - presumably moving N-S

nope - south to north - stopped here as well!

yup - single speed wipers - M6 -all that spray, surface water - audis driving like twats and HGVs - 800cc of air cooled power - maybe I'm a wimp but I would rather it were sunny!!!

I would rather it were sunny!!!

Well, yes it is always nicer that way but you might leave the South in blistering sunshine (like wot we always have) to be greated in the grim North by heavy rain (like wot they always have). I imagine in that situation you wouldn't just abandon the car and continue by thumbing for rides in BMWs so there's not much point abandoning plans for a proper adventurous journey in an old car because its raining a bit where you are now.

Good luck if you do take the DAF, ik zal voor je duimen!

Wot Seth said!

Drive it you big jessie!

steady on chaps - Mr Torsten, you more than any know that I for one have never shirked at driving an old banger great distances - six times bitten in 12 months makes you shy as last year I eneded up being resuced onlong journeys 6 times

moggy - failed coil

moggy - failed coil (again!)

Shogun - failed fuel pump

Golf Clipper - blocked carb

Golf Clipper - fuel leak

Volvo 960 - ignition failure

I have spend in total over 50 hours either waiting for recovery or on the back of flat beds

wimp I am not - and these aren't jolly trips either - they are usually at noght and after a slog in the orfice!! :?

Thing is, you love it!

Pack an RAC Card, bring a sleeping bag, a shovel and some Kendal Mint Cake!

The answer is clearly not to use anything built after about 1975 and to carry a spare coil

As long as you stay at a comfortable speed, you should be alright, shirely? Even the most knackered old banger will do 55mph for hours, and the cooler weather will stop it overheating

get a grappling hook, tie it to the front bumper with a tow rope, throw it out at the first truck you see from Scotland that is heading north and hitch a free ride!

Why not the A1 > A696 > A68??
