50mpg?

My mum had a 205 diesel for years - she used to get 55mpg out of it, and never had any trouble with it. They go a lot better than a 106 and are a far better proposition on a motorway run, and because the engine isn't working as hard there's not much difference in economy in real terms, and they're more refined too. Plus the 1769cc engine is more likely to be able to run on veg than the 1360/1527 in the 106. The 205 turbo diesel is a wondrous machine, but good ones (understandably) hold their money quite well.

Charade TDs are ridiculously economical and more fun to drive than you'd think. Try finding one that hasn't been killed by arch and sill rot though... Nova TDs aren't that bad either - not as fun as a Charade or Pug but quite indecently quick for their engine size. Don't think either of the above would cope with speed bumps as well as a 205 though.

I don't think the TDs were a 1.9 tbh Tom, I'm sure they share the same engine as the BX 1.7TD (1769cc?) as the 1.9TD would have been utterly mental in the 205 and very fifficult to keep on the road.

I stand to be corrected here by the way.

No, you're more likely to be correct than me. I remember what the 306 was like (that was the 1.9 I am sure), so an excursion into the ditch would be unavoidable in a 205.

I am probably muddling up the GTi 1.9 which was essentially the same engine as the Peugeot GTXi I used to pootle around in. I think. err...

{loses all confidence in Peugeot engine knowledge...}

I thiink most of them are fitted with Lucas injection pumps, all the ones I've seen have been.

Is the 205 TD that good? IIRC they aren't intercooled due to lack of space so don't make that much power over the the n/a engine, and I imagine the throttle response and consistent power delivery of the n/a engine is sacrificed.

Another vote for a peugeot 106 or 205 here. The rallye has a stiffer suspension set up than the lesser versions, hence the hard ride over speed ramps but saying that it sticks to the road like shit on a blanket. The noise does become tiresome but thats the point of the car. I had a very early 205 with a slanted 104 style lump in it and i couldn't fault it. The other car to look for provided it been looked after is the citroen AX, lighter and certainly more shite but very cheap at the moment. I saw a blue p reg 1.5 diesel for sale for £450 recently - it was mint with 38k on the clock. Can forward details.

The 205TD made 78bhp, as opposed to 59 for the NA, so a useful increase. They don't suffer from turbo lag much either - the lack of an intercooler helps here. I don't think any of the TDs had Bosch pumps though, although many NAs did.

306 was a 1.9 (and fugging quick for a diesel of its time). 205 was only ever a 1.8 - and IIRC they struggled to fit even that under the bonnet. The 309TD was also a 1.8, although the NA could be had with a 1.9.

205 good.

106 bad.

I ran a 1360 diesel 106 for three soul destroying years. I only kept it so long because I kept continually shelling out for repairs and felt it 'owed' me more usage. Eventually, enough was enough, and it had to go.

Or how about a 1 litre SEAT Arosa? Surprisingly nice to drive, surprisingly plush, and VAG build quality. Should be plenty out there for a few hundred quid now, and 50mpg should be easily achievable. They all had decent stereos too, which if you're commuting is always nice. Get a really early one (R plate) and you even get a golf ball gearknob, in biegey brown. To top it all off, they came in some amazingly naff colours, such as terracotta and powder blue - so Autoshite chic is within your grasp with one of these beauties.

I've been driving a 106 Diesel at work a bit recently, I thought I'd like it but to be honest I am not all that impressed. Admittedly it's probably well worn, but doesnt seem to handle well, the lack of power steering is annoying (I know..), not enough room inside, heavy/stiff clutch and quite heavy/stiff throttle. It could be just this particular example for some of these faults but considering I thought it may be fun to drive I felt a bit let down.

Erm, as much as it really pains me to say it but a Passat dizzling seems a good bet for economy.

Mine's doing 45mpg no danger on urban runs and I reckon some OAP style driving on the motorway would see it hit the magic fifty mark.

Our C5 managed 57mpg on its most recent tank.

There was a lot of motorway driving involved and some Wat-style steering shake keeps the speed down but it's still pretty impressive for such a behemoth of a car.
