Short term insurance

Howdy folksI've bought a new motor, but insurance is a bit of a stumbling block. It's a 55 year old vehicle, and some day insurance places frown on anything over 10. (more details on the car to follow, but I can't blab too much just yet). Now, if I was insured with a normal company, I could just phone them and get the thing added - but classic insurance companies still seem to be somewhere in the past, like the cars they cover, so they don't work weekends. I really want to pick the car up tomorrow, but cannae get cover!!Any ideas? I don't have third party cover on any vehicle (which technically wouldn't count anyway as it doesn't work on your own vehicles).

Would an extra driver with a "drive other vehicles" type policy work? Presumably if it's still covered by the svendors insurance this could be feasable? How far have you got to move it?

At first glance, dayinsure.com don't appear to have any age criteria on the vehicle....

Dayinsure just went WTF when I entered the car's details. RAC website listed the car, led me through all the details, then said 'sod off, it's too old.'I've got to drive it 66 miles to get home, so really should do it properly. In theory, I'm a named driver on my wife's policy with Direct Line, so I think that'd give me third party, or maybe I can get it temporarily added to her policy as that big red telephone tends to work weekends.

The "driving other cars" thing only works if the car is already insured in its own right, so unless the previous owner still has it insured that's not a goer. The best plan is to try and get it covered on your wife's policy I think.

Yeah, I was gonna say if the owner has still got it insured then it may work? Have you tried www.askmid.com to see if it's on the insurance database? I'd chance it if it's still insured myself. I think DayInsure frown at anything older than 1995 IIRC...

Can't you just ask Sarah Sharples to add it to Bauer's insurance for the day?/K

Well, wife's insurance doesn't cover me out of the box, but could do if we added her to the policy.Keith - that suggestion is entirely on my mind, but would have to wait until Monday - and I can speak to my insurance company then anyway. Doesn't help me collect it tomorrow.

Fair enough. Sorry.Good luck with it, anyway./K

Try Tesco's, They added me on a day's insurance on my 35 year old BMW last year when i went to collect it, they even gave me breakdown cover for the day, I just had to cancel it the following day and wasn't charged, They even recommended me to do that!.

My dad had an argument with some colleagues about exactly this point, this week. Brought on by me asking him (he is insured to drive other folks cars) to test drive my Rover 220, which is not insured in its own right. The argument went on long enough for him to settle it by phoning his insurance company and asking them if they would have paid out, if he'd bumped this Rover while testing it. Their answer was, that they would have! I have often heard it said that this 'other cars' cover only works if the car is insured elsewhere, but I have never seen it written in any policy small print anywhere.

Sod it. I give up. Tried Tesco - website fail. Tried Direct Line - doesn't list the car. Tried many day insurance places - most won't touch anything over ten years, though e-insurance will cover anything post-1970. Worth noting for you lot I imagine - thank the current owner of my Bond for that titbit on Retro-Rides.On top of that, my wife and I both have colds that have left us feeling absolutely shattered, so another 130 mile drive this weekend probably isn't wise.

Regardless of actual law or the opinion of the insurers I am 99.999% certain that if, during the course of that drive, your dad was stopped by some meat-headed neanderthal in a stab vest filming an episode of "road wars", they would arrest him, rough him up [on camera] until his basic human instinct to resist taking a beating kicked in and thus arrest him some more for resisting arrest, breach of the peace and assaulting an officer. Oh and your Rover would get immediately towed and crushed and you'd both get £300 fines.

NEXT ON ROAD WARS!

An unlicensed scally mows down a pensioner in a nicked Astra and feels the full weight of the law as he gets a £30 fine and 12 hours community service. . .

Thanks for the thoughts, but I'll just wait. Too ill. One phonecall on Monday and I'm all sorted.

Sod it. Excitement gets the better of illness. I've finally found a way of getting classic cover, which I intend to cancel, so I can get the thing home. Now I've just got to hurly myself at the mercy of public transport, unless anyone just happens to be driving from Huntingdon to Sudbury this morning?
