Dick Cheeseburger Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 You know those then and now street scene comparison photos which often appear on social media? Occasionally, someone will post a 'then' photo but struggles to work out where the location was. This photo was shared in the 'One shite picture per post' thread recently. A bit of digging around suggests the photo was taken in Altrincham in the 70s, and shows 'George Street towards the town centre' apparently. I've looked on streetview and can't find a modern angle which looks even vaguely similar. Can anyone else work it out? Feel free to share your own head-scratchers or even just then and now comparison photos.
busmansholiday Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Centre of Altrincham has been flattened and pedestrianised like many cities. Searching is easy, click on picture, select share then Google Lens, works about 90% of the time for pics nicked off the web.
3VOM Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Altrincham also reworked the bus "station" / train interchange when railway was the end of the line IIRC. I now think this is the north end, which got the roads changed around to ease the A56 Chester Road to A560 towards Wythenshawe

From here https://www.altrinchamheritage.com/?page_id=58 , Young Cheshire used to be at number 12. The building doesn't look identical I agree, but almost nothing in Altrincham is untouched.
