Today I saw a W plate one (old W) but it was a Mk1 van - surely by W plates they should have been Mk 2 Vans?? Or did they soldier on with the old front end for ages?

The Mk2 van & estate were actually Mk1's with Mk2 panels bolted on the front, hence you can make a Mk2 look like a Mk1 pretty easily & vice-versa.

That was a Mk2 with a Mk1 Mexico front for some reason. (Although to some it's probably a Mk176b)
