Got home about an hour ago, the journey back was surprisingly smooth and trouble free! I think it once again is the case of a caring long term (2nd) owner being followed up by a very dodgy short term one.

As mentioned, the cats were removed from the car, probably by the seller (who turns out to be a trader) to get the most profit out of the car, thinking that nobody would notice. I'm not sure how much these went for at the scrappy in the end but they probably didn't get the 700 quid they lost from the previously agreed on price (which already was 500 quid less than originally advertised).

So with that in mind I'm not sure if I got a great deal or not. The car should clean up quite nicely, replacing the cats will be costly though. I'm happy to hear any suggestions!

Haha, let's see what the gf says after having driven it for a little. It is intended to be hers after all. At least once I sorted it out properly.
