Since i bought my 25 V6 Turbo the stereo has never worked correctly,so at last i decided to try and get to the bottom of this problem..I,ve fitted a genuine brand NOS stereo, boxed totally complete and working as it shouldIts had a new aerial and base, its got the original lead from the roof to the stereo, but i used the new one i got with the base and plugged it straight into the stereo and connected to the car aerialSo whats the problem, its the fact i have NO FM......LW/MW are spot on fine, but no FM stations can be heard,i,ve programmed them in,but nothing, not a thing,if you turn it up loud you can just hear the station you have tuned, this is the 3rd stereo in the car(all genuine factory fit items)what the hell is happening??

i'd say the stereo's must be duff (retro fit a modern one in your glovebox instead ;))aint they made by phillips the old renault ones :?:D

Yep its the big Phillips double DIN unit,it won,t be the stereo, the chap i bought it from fitted it and said it was perfect(and hes a mate)and ALL 3 units i,ve had do exactly the same thing, this i find to much of a fluke?.

Silly question but do these have an aerial amplifier? If so is it fitted and working?

This ampifier is one thing that has crossed my mind, anyone have a rough idea of the location of one? There is something that looks like a supressor on the coil, which uses the coil bolt hole and plugs into the coil pack.

Hi,

i had the same problem with my V6 turbo and it seems like the radio has been replaced by Renault in its early life without solving the original problem

The aerial cable is acutally made up of two cables. There is another connector (white plastic) behind the radio, about 30 cm from the end that you plug into the stereo.

In my case, this connector was not pushed togehter properly - it looks OK, but there is no connection. That solved all problems :)

At the same time, I added an aux jack to hook up my mp3 player which works great:

All the 1990s VWs I've owned have had to have an FM amplifier on the aerial... it's a 4" long tube which is has an aerial socket on one end, and two short cables on the other. Short aerial cable plugs into back of head unit, and cable from aerial plugs into the socket on the amplifier. The other cable is a power lead from the amp/switched live from the head unit (usually blue wire) which powers the amplifier when the head unit is on.

One of these in fact

Hi,

I just found two pictures: this is the connector I was refering to: It is the white connector with the blue aerial cable.

HiThanks for all the adviseMust admit i pluged the blue lead straight into the unitthe connector seems to dissapear into the console,so i think i need to route this back and be sure its connected,it wasn,t loose and didn,t pull out but as you say it might not be 100% connected..but if it wasn,t surely i wouldn,t get LW/MW would i??Thinking about it,i disconnected the blue lead with the radio and lost LW/MW then when reconnected it they came back, doesn,t this point to the lead being connected?

I’ve never worked on a 25 installation, but I have encountered exactly this problem a number of times before i.e. AM ok, no FM. Last time was on a Freelander. Every time it’s been caused by an open circuit aerial earth; sometimes at the head unit connector, sometimes at the aerial mounting. I know you’ve substituted the aerial cable but indulge me a little. Do you have a multimeter? Measure the resistance from the earth of the existing aerial cable (head unit end) to a known good earth point. A pillar door hinge bolts are normally within reach of standard meter lead sets.If this checks out ok, some photos of the back of the head unit and all loom ends would be helpful (I can't quite make out the function of all the cables in Daniel's photos).I’ve no idea if an aerial amplifier was standard fitment to your car. If it was and there’s been previous attempts to fix this or another problem, is it actually still there? Sounds a bit daft I know, but if it’s never worked in your ownership…I'd imagine you'd have access to official Renault 25 wiring diagrams (Haynes may suffice if not). If there was an amplifier it'll be shown there.Let us know how you get on.

i THINK i may now have the answer to the strange FM problem,i visited the 25 today and thought i would try the stereo again, turned the ignition on and the FM worked fine!!! Now i believe the problem lies in the ambient temp When i tried the stereo with not sucess last week my car was showing 3 degrees, today it was showing 11 degress as the sun was on the garage,it may be a strange idea but i think its true, the car wasn,t running,it wasn,t warm in the car, just the air temp was warmer and it worked fine!! We had a load of stereo problems with modern Renaults a month ago when the temp dropped very low,now in the last week or so nothing...
