I had intended on lowering the bus anyway, didn't expect it to do it for me though.

The wife said something didn't sound right last time she drove it, I used it this morning and less than a mile down the road there were some really interesting grinding, banging, pinging noises.

What's that bouncing out of view in the rear view mirror? A piece of 20 year old Mercedes metal.

Then came a strong burning rubber smell, pulled over, waited for the smoke to clear and the front OS corner is an inch lower.

I do have these waiting to be fitted but didn't fancy tackling it just yet.

I think that makes the daily driver the only one of the fleet I can safely use at the mo.

How's the inside tyre sidewall? Has it chewed through it?

Nearly, ran a groove in it close to the rim, dodged a bullet

I did that once coming down the Long Ashton bypass into Bristol.

For many years there was a clod of sticky tyre rubber attached to one of the lamp posts from it, from where I pulled over at the bottom by the slip road after having had no choice but to continue until there was space to stop.

Good luck with the red springs

The opposite was the problem for some mates on that same piece of road some time in the 80s: four up in a reliant that shed a tyre and ended up on its roof, and then took a surprising distance to stop - the grp roof made a better sled for the occupants than the three wheeled pig had as a car. Charmed lives...

Driveway tinkering update.

Interesting location for the spring.

Time to get professional, magnetic light

Top mount nut access is tight

Managed to get all the bolts undone then came to the last one, top nut of the tie bar which connects the strut to the anti roll bar.

It turned with very little effort, great, it's coming off nice and easy. Nahh. Bolt was just spinning. Thinking time required.

More tools required.

Had a go at tackling the bottom one instead. This meant taking off some plastic trim for more access, of course. Damn, this one just turned like the top one.

Turns out it needs a spanner on the other end of the bolt too, that wasn't in the youtube instruction video! More leverage required.

Some very awkward wiggling and swearing and more wiggling and eventually it came free. It's off!

That's enough for the day. Time to walk the dog and go to the pub then do some googling for spring compressors.

Some shiny bits finally arrived yesterday.

First one assembled

Then fitted with a bit of swearing and some grazed knuckles

You'll notice there is a cover missing to the right of the strut, I only noticed after I'd fitted the wheel and dropped it down. Put the tools away and saw that it was still in the back of the van 🤬

Wheel back off in the morning then.

Will get the other side fitted tomorrow too and go for a test drive.
