West Norfolk and Lincolnshire seems to be a tat-fest

Just been to Spalding and back and saw more shite in that journey than the last 2000 mile month of journeys put together. Camry 2.2 saloon and Maestro Clubman D pulling out of Sainsbury in Thetford - both gleaming and sure to have matching Thermos and blanket.A134 contained Kia Clarus, slidey door Sherpa, MkII Cavalier saloon with no model lettering - assumes a 1.4 then. Then just before King's Lynn a maroon Granada 1.8GL; on the A47/A17 junction a Metro GTa and VW Derby in yoof-convoy. A17 contained no less than 2 more Claruses (although one may have been a Mentor), old Hyundai Lantra saloon, Volvo 345GL, Subaru Justy, Skoda Favorit in that weird blue/green flat colour, a Latvian Lancia Y10; and on the A151 into Spalding a maroon Renault 18 GTL estate (seriously crabbing towards me).It was as if Autoshite was having a "do" in Clenchwarton or something.

Ah yes, I pass through Spalding quite regularly and it is indeed full of tat in the automotive and architectural sense.Kings Lynn auction used to look like a scrap yard rather than a sale, I havent been for years but I doubt it has improved.I still think the biggest tat haul I ever saw was a car sales place in Stanground Peterborough which had some vaugely reasonable stuff at the front for a couple of grand, and decended into tat as you got towards the back of the yard where we found the ultimate forecourt shite, a Mk4 Cortina with no windscreen, but still with a price hanging off the sun visor.

I wonder if the general low property prices has anything to do with this?

I remember the Stanground Autos ads in the free papers in the late 80's. I would be very surprised if that company hadn't advertised a Tagora or two for sale before around that time. They did seem to deal in complete obscurity aside from 3 Sierras and an Orion in bold at the top.The A17 does pass through some desolation doesn't it? If I were Lithuanian or northern Polish, I would be feeling very much at home there. I passed many a field with a beaten up old LDV or Transit minibus parked up with a leather jacket shod thug snoozing at the wheel while a team of labourers wearing every item of clothing they had picked stuff off bushes and out of the ground - I think I even saw one field with sugar beet being hand-harvested, although I guess they were looking for what the machinery missed. Most of the car transporters shuttling between Spalding and KL were Lithuanian plated.Property tends to be cheap due to floodplain issues - hardly anything is mortgagable around there. Ironic though, as the capacity of the pumps in this area means Peterborough would be flooded before they were.

As some might remember, me and my folks ended up having to go to BUTLINS in Skegness for some dreary pre-arranged family "do" one weekend (around spring if I recall). I turned up on Friday very late on, then on Saturday morning I got dressed and drove around alone pretty much all day. Both Friday/Saturday evenings I put in a brief appearance, then quietly disappeared and drank a bottle of whisky I bought from Spar in Ingoldmells. Sunday I went home.

Worked out quite well as I got to have a nice drive around Lincolnshire, spotted some tat and most importantly avoided seeing my extended family, who probably all hate me by now.

Here's some Lincolnshite:
