Cavcraft Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I'd seriously considered trying to import new Ladas not so long back. Be a shame if they went under but seems to be the way of the world now Mark.Incidentally did I see new Rivas on the second link? Surely they don't make them anymore do they?I did spot a few Nivas too but would imagine they're reasonably popular over there due to the shit weather they get!
mnde Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 Incidentally did I see new Rivas on the second link? Surely they don't make them anymore do they?Yeah that's exactly what I thought. It must have been an old clip...That red one in the ebay tat thread reminded me of the one my friend used to have. Low mileage, it still smelt new inside (H reg). It came with a small tin of touch up paint with russian writing on it. The controls were... interesting, the turning circle horrendous. But it went okay, and I was sad when he sold it. It'd had an issue with front brakes though. One day he was bowling along and both front hub caps pinged off - presumably because the brakes were sticking and the wheels got toasty!Mark.
pandamonium Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Nivas and Rivas are still produced. You can but a brand new Niva in this country for about £6k OTR. LHD tho.
Station Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Aren't they GM owned, or were?I can't imagine them being without an owner for long though??

pandamonium Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 My wife has said I can buy one in a year or two. Can wait to stick two fingers up to 'the man' by buying a 'brand new' 1970's 4x4!
Mr Lobster Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I thought Renault bought a stake in Lada earlier in the year?

Can wait to stick two fingers up to 'the man' by buying a 'brand new' 1970's 4x4!Those alloys would have to go. Get some genuine 1970s steelies, all rutsy with peeling paint and unable to hold the tyre pressure.
VWPowered Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 shame that does it mean the price will now go up on ol' 125P/124/Riva's etc
Cavcraft Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Wasn't aware that GM had owned them tbh but could be true of course.I loved my old Riva but the turning circle was pretty comical as you said Mark. Even more fun was the fact you had to turn the wheel 227 times before the car actually vaguely went in the direction you wanted
pandamonium Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 GM didnt own any of Lada, but a GM injection system is used in the latest ones. So you could say they 'supported' Lada.
r.welfare Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 GM definitely had (or have) a joint venture with AutoVAZ, making the Mk4 Astra saloon and the Chevrolet Niva, which is a rebodied version of the original. And the reason they left the UK market (IIRC) is GM wouldn't supply them with enough injection equipment - post-1992 Rivas and Nivas still had a carb, and that proved to be a bitch from an emissions perspective, poisoning the cat in no time.I'd say that the Lada Kalina definitely appears to have overtones of the original Vauxhall Corsa in it's design, too.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 I thought Renault bought a stake in Lada earlier in the year?I think Renner have got some sort of interest in the lada factory.
oldford Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Are you not getting confused with Renaults tie up with Dacia?
