ooer...steel cables with 30ton on one end & 68ton on t'other. :shock: I think i'd have been stood in the forrest, a good distance away. Fascinating find though, would've loved to have been there.

Brilliant, cheers for the link.Shame they restored it in a way as I reckon it would have been better displayed 'as found' but that was a fascinating story well worth reading.

Amazing! It mentions peat. Isn't that a really good preservative? I seem to recall its a good place to find fossils.

Peat's great for preserving things, as is silt - it doesn't contain the oxygen required to cause corrosion.

I love these, must be the lack of oxygen in the peat that keeps em form the tin worm....

I'll try putting peat into my arches this winter!Think I would've kept the German markings on it, it seems ruined and pointless now they repainted it.
