Noisy Octavia vrs- nonplussed?

Some of you may recall I purchased a bright yellow petrol Octavia(2) vrs for the boss’ winter car.

It’s a belter, goes like hell, uses no fluids, shows no problems. She’s covered about 25 k in it, without issue thru the dark months.

However, on tickover, it sounds like a diesel. X’cept its petrol..... It’s running perfectly, she’s convinced it’s getting noisier. I’m not. But it’s clearly noticeable.

To me, it ‘ sounds’ more like a race cam, with bigger clearances, but there’s no other signs of “ tuning”, anywhere.

We’ve taken into two “ experts” both had no answer. One reluctantly suggested timing chain, but it sounds nothing like that, is coming from both ends of the engine. I’d do it, to eliminate, but it’s quite a big job.

I know nothing on these engines so thought I’d ask the knowledgeable, here.

So you VW/Audi/Skoda sniffers out there. Any ideas/ pointers/ suggestions plz?

She’s going to drive me mad if I can’t shut it up!

1.8t ? Do these have vvt? Could be a dephaser if so ? They are belt cam with a small chain at the gearbag end to link the cams aren’t they ?

Wasn't this the MK2 vrs if I remember your previous threads correctly? I.e. the 2.0TFSi.

If so, it depends on the year on which engine exactly. VAG went through several revisions over the years on this engine. Around 2009 it had a radical redesign (not for the best either).

Diesel sound on these engines often is the injectors and/or High Pressure Fuel Pump. A small amount is normal and a common complaint. Loud is not. If an early one (older than 2007) check the HPFP cam follower - Google will show what they are supposed to look like and a heavily worn one will. Later ones had chronic problems with the cam chains & tensioners. Iirc early ones weren't exempt either. Later ones are fully cam chained, early ones have the two cams connected with a chain and one cam connected to a belt to the crank.

It is the same car - I don’t own any other Vw/Audi franchise- no fan of the brand...

It’s an 04 TFsI.

How do I check that- lift the rocker cover? It does fell like the cam too me, like the followers are tired. But it reacts like a scalded cat...

Keeping it simple to start with, check the air intake side for any splits or loose pipes between the air box and manifold too
