Sorry to be pedantic (or possibly wrong) but the middle bit isn't plastic is it?

Not that im aware of Mate of mine had one in Silver with the exact bumpers on (think it was a laser what the engine was escaped my mind)But it was certainly metal the "Middle" piece as you say because when we removed it, shock horror RUST
