MorrisItalSLX Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 It is about time I started a thread about my motoring escapades, so as I wait for a tow truck I decided to get it started. What’s happened? Why, the Jaguar has FTP’d for the second time in my ownership! Yippee! I was driving along and it just lost all power, started coughing and spluttering and then just died. Fantastic. It won’t start up again so the tow has been called and I’ll have to see what’s the matter. So all in all, a really rather rubbish commencement to this thread. Eddie Honda, LightBulbFun and Joloke 3
LightBulbFun Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 like for the thread being started but Booo! to the FTP, hopefully its nothing too serious (Yes I know its a Jag Yes you can stop laughing now...) MorrisItalSLX 1
MorrisItalSLX Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 Picked up And dropped off Mechanic suspects the issue is fuel related, but he’ll have a look tomorrow. Bugger. Cardinal Wolseley, LT84, LightBulbFun and 1 other 4
Guest Hooli Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Liked for the Jag content. My first guess from your description was fuel pump, but I dunno how it works on those twin tank cars. MorrisItalSLX 1
MorrisItalSLX Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 The mechanic has called and apparently it started up when he went to move it this afternoon. It spluttered initially but ran smooth after about 30 seconds. Further investigation will commence tomorrow.
Guest Hooli Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 It's not old electro-mechanical SU fuel pumps on them is it? with the points inside that wear out & stick? I've heard of them failing when hot for years on MGs. Letting them cool down or twatting them to free the points normally gets the car moving again if so. MorrisItalSLX and mrbenn 2

I've heard of them failing when hot for years on MGs. Letting them cool down or twatting them to free the points normally gets the car moving again if so. I beleive the pump is a Bosch item, but I could be wrong. The in-tank filters are a known weak point of the fuel system so they are high on my suspect list. That being said, the fault you mentioned with the SU pump does sound plausible with the car starting when it had cooled down. I'll pass that information on to the mechanic.
MorrisItalSLX Posted February 8, 2019 Author Posted February 8, 2019 Well, the Jag is back. Mechanic cleaned the fuel filters and checked the pump (Bosch) and could not see any issue. He filled up the tanks and drove it around (and probably gave it an Italian tune up while he was at it!) and it didn’t miss a beat. So I’m going to call that problem solved for the time being and hope that it was just a once off. RobT 1
MorrisItalSLX Posted February 8, 2019 Author Posted February 8, 2019 Stunning Car Well jealous you have all those cars we hardly ever see now here like Mk2 Escrot Vans,Bedford CF's,Datsuns etc that are rust free!!! Passed a Jaguar Dealer on Wednesday I cringe at Jaguar now everything they make now is soo bland apart from the is it the F Type? Even thats not right but just not as much cold porridge styling of the others like awarded for having a Propper Jaguar I find it amazing how much Mk2 Escorts cost in the UK. I could buy a genuine RS2000 for the same money as a rough UK 2 door! The X300 was the last real Jaguar in my eyes. None of this V8 business or fake British styling to please the Americans. Guest Hooli Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 The X300 was the last real Jaguar in my eyes. None of this V8 business or fake British styling to please the Americans. I always thought that & then I tried a X308, they are still Jags even if the engine noise is different. It's pretty much a re-engined XJ40 anyway, everything is in the same place etc just tweaked a bit. Nowt newer looks like a Jag to me though. MorrisItalSLX 1

Heh, blokey was looking $7,900 for that one... though in fairness, I was surprised to find when I was out there that there was really no such thing as a cheap car in Australia. Being used to driving £250 knackers in Norn Iron (and it's still impressive to see what £250 will buy you), it was a shock to find that even a beat-to-shit Ford Laser with accident damage, burned-off paint, shot suspension and an interior that had apparently been home to several generations of possums was well over the $1000 mark (the Avante set me back $1800 from a dealer in Brisbane, in 2005 money - and it was very much a heap. It was a toss-up between the Toyota and a white Camira with a red crushed-velvet interior that looked like a bordello on wheels for the same price, but as we know, ALL HOLDENZ ARE SHIT M8.) Very interested to find out what you've come home with... flat4alfa 1
