J-tin at Billing (with Autoshite extras)

Some Billing pics here, if you've seen them over on OJC you can see them again with different captions. This is about half of them, I'm going to do the others when I get some time free.

Posted Image

I like having a classy sign (as seen on AS/OJC weekender). Mash sorted it.

Posted Image

A row of our lot - the Toyota boys were opposite us.

Posted Image

The worst thing about these events is that some people bring some right old heaps.

Posted Image

120Y panel van! Weird van versions of old Japanese cars should be an Autoshite megaspot.

Posted Image

Minter of a Laurel with talking dashboard, KEY IS IN THE IGNITION! LIGHTS ARE ON!

Posted Image

Most definitely not shite.

Posted Image

Lovely!

Pair of 70s boys.

MEDALIST SO GR8 4 CHINTZING

Posted Image

I'd love to know what that badge is meant to mean - the logo is all over the place, on the hubcaps too.

Posted Image

I should have got that "I love AE86" shirt to wear when I drive the Stanza, to be all hip and ironic. And some fancy shoes with chequers on them. And some of those charity wristbands. And a tattoo of Oscar from Sesame Street.

Posted Image

Mmmmmm, Celeste!

Posted Image

160J rallying edition, these are a bit fancy for me, I'd prefer the boring 4-door.

Posted Image

A pair of rears. You can see the Toyota club tent there, they all gathered in it at some point to have a discussion.

Posted Image

Brown Sunny with turbo so GR8 4 DRI- etc.

Posted Image

Where's the single carb? And the oil leaks?

Posted Image

Nice Autoshite colour.

Posted Image

For Mash get Smash.

Posted Image

SL let me and Datsuncherry/Reallyloud/The Blue Lumiere drive this around the campsite, what a weapon, you can hear it gurgle all the fuel away. I need a big six.

Posted Image

Some little models, these aren't very shitey.

Posted Image

First Crown in the UK, I'd have this but I suspect my £100 budget would only stretch to me getting a headlight bezel.

Posted Image

Crown Custom, this was spectacularly shitey, the paint looked like it had been applied with an old rag. Utterly fantastic! GR8 4 OFFERING SWEETZ TO KIDS

Posted Image

This is a Century, basically a great big chintzy limo.

Posted Image

Mint Celica Supra on a trailer for some reason, must have broken down.

Hey it's Mat, no it isn't.

Starlet inexplicably not wearing Irish plates and sliding around a cone.

I nearly bought one of these years ago as a first car, it was a bit of a shed though.

This Carina is the spit of the one I've seen in Castleford (except the one in Castleford is in awful condition).

One of the finest rear light arrangements ever.

Another Autoshite colour choice.

Bigger ones on the Flickr account here.

And here's a couple of Autoshite bonus cars.

Haggard-looking Mondeo, just needs some crap respray action around the arches, bit of stonechip, fibreglass front wings, etc.

And a much nicer Zodiac.

Part two to follow when I can be bothered. OK!

'2.8' badge suggests an upgrade to the later Crown running gear - or perhaps the big Celica/Supra/whatever thing it was. This combo must be the ultimate Crown in my book (trying to fill Hirst's sensible trousers here ( ) I'm thinking in terms of the liveable-with 'economy' from the later lock-up gearboxes).

The funny-shaped emblem on my old Laurel hardtop is, I think, a Laurel wreath. Because Laurels are for winners, obviously.Supra on the trailer was off it later in the day. For sale at £2800, looked very clean. It arrived late on Saturday night, the FWD camper towing it struggled to get traction on the grass and we had some wheelspinning antics. Billing might chuck us out if they find out...

Slightly OT - but on the subject of cars sliding round cones - apparently there is a variation on this where the passenger gets out and stands by the front wheel while the car pirouettes around them. I saw a yootoob fillum in which a BMW started to do this, but ended up sliding round on top of the passenger. It didn't look as cool as the chaps involved had probably intended. It looked like it hurt quite a lot too. And probably dented the sump.Sorry - as you were chaps - back to the OJC.

That Celeste was on eBay a while ago and it's an absolute minter. And older than mine. Mine has the 'revised' grille and a different rear end treatment. And that R plater I think is a 2000.

You failed to mention the magnificent Jean Michel Jarre soundtrack in the car as we cruised in and out of the trampolenes, duckshit and 10 year old Vauxhalls.

Plans for a side exit exhaust?

We should have rigged it up as some kind of Boso exhaust thing, using some of Mash's cable ties and the charred bit of wood that was left on the field.

RL/Hirst, I noticed that JMJ had been playing. It was in the car when I collected it and has been there ever since. Don't know if you noticed the tape player is auto reverse, and with that kind of music it's difficult to know where it starts and finishes so it just tends go on and on and on...

Perhaps Richard Clayderman or James Galway can make an appearance again next year.

What car is this (Galant/Sapporo/Colt)? My old Biology teacher had an A-reg, I think it had Mitsubishi Colt on the back. It was quite big, but I can't remember it. :(

Posted

It's Hirt's Galant. It's like an Autoshite mascot, probably the most well known car on here!I think it's a officially a Colt Galant (as opposed to a Mitsubishi one), but most people on here will know better than me!

What a coincidence, I have been listening to 'Jean Michel Jarre in Concert' all week in my pickup truck after stumbling across that marvellous tape. Even more bizarrely I found a few old boy tapes (including richard clayderman) in the Integra this morning!

Here's some more suitable pickup truck music for you Mr B, who's pickin' a banjee here?:

Now we're onto the Celicas, not much shite here I'm afraid.

Worth more than I'll earn in my entire lifetime.

As are these two.

Strange private import with odd Japanese wheels.

Looks ace so it gets a grille shot.

Celica Supra #1.

Celica Supra #2.

Nice to see one of these that isn't scabby and battered.

Convertible version is a neat job.

More to come at some point.

Those Celica 165s are great, nice pics. They do seem to have disappeared as you say.Dont have the same love for the later versions, the 205 and whatever that last one was. Seem to be getting slightly barried now too. Shame..

Posted

I too am a big fan of those things, 150bhp from 2 litres NA several years before the benchmark 'XE' and no doubt longer lasting. The glasshouse styling owes something to the Panhard 24CT apparently, you can see it in the rear 3/4 view. I'd love to use one as a daily for a while, bet i'd end up thinking it was the bees knees before too long.

Posted

That red one was in stunning condition too. That model was a massive step forwards after the last of the RWD Celicas (the wedgy, angular one that's largely unloved, unless it's a Supra).

Posted

I think I may have attempted to self-pollute over a brochure of one of those FWD Celicas when they were first launched in the `80s, but I cannot be sure. Perhaps I just like to think I did, or maybe it was just a hollow boast. The convertible version ought to be a neat job, it was part of the range, pitched as "3 cars in one" as the roof was made up of a fabric hood which covered the rear half, making a sort of targa top, and then a manually fitted glass panel to close up the gap. It looked stunning with the top down (well I clearly thought so, eh?) and a bit odd in "targa" mode.
