Worlds Fastest Van

It is a bit sad that TV has to be like this, but they're all the same.

I quite like reality TV stuff  - Super Truckers, Paddington Station, that Trucking Hell one that follows Crouch Recovery around dragging trucks out of fields etc. But it's all the same, you get 15 minutes between each advert break which is 4 minutes "here's what's going to happen next", six minutes of things happening, and then five minutes of "what will happen next? We'll find out after the break". I long for a Smart TV that's Smart enough to strip out all the recaps, precaps, precap recaps and adverts and be left with 12 minutes per hour of actual factual viewing.

And the mock drama too. "This has happened. It could spell the end of the road, it's going to take a lot of skill to get around this particular event" and they just show an everyday occurrence. The Trucking Hell one is the worst for that, every single fucking time they drag a truck away they have to remove the propshaft, it's literally part of the job, but they explain it like it's lucky he did that otherwise the truck would EXPLODE.

Guy’s rear wheels were from a Range Rover.

Looking back at van runs, Sabine Schmit managed 10:08 in an older Transit with 130bhp and a few small pieces removed to compensate for the weight of Hammond.

The stock VW with 140bhp managed 9:57.

Guy Martin had a 700bhp mid-engined van with upgraded aero, brakes and suspension which had been on a crash diet.

For about 3.5 seconds a mile improvement...

I would have loved it if they had handed the van to Dale Lomas or whatever his name was and let him loose for a few laps.

I'd wager he could have shaved another minute off

It was absolute dross. A shame really, as GM can crack-on bike wise.

I swear C4 planners think "oh, he'll appeal to former Top Gear viewers due to the bikes, blokiness and thick Humberside accent and he'll appeal to Guardianistas [C4s main target audience] due to his 'working class' gruffness and well reported ASD tendencies". It just makes for crap viewing, and as said early on in this thread shit-loads of counterfeit jeopardy. I hope he's well paid.

I thought it was alright. “It is what it is.”

Plus, I saw Nigel the Labrador. You’ll do for me, boy.

I think it's a case of over exposure. The man himself stated that he'd had a busy year and reeled off a load of stuff that has appeared on tv.Some were right clunkers too (China/Russia-not what I wanted to see from him) but some excellent (Vulcan, fastest road race,WW1 tank,F1 pit crew).Capable he may be but he ain't no Fred Dibnah. His pieces to camera are starting to grate.Judging by his new house and'workshop' he's done ok.Wish he'd take a break and get back to the TT.

In the books he always said he never used to spend the TV money, as it didn’t feel like he had earned it.

He was more interested in Saturday mornings in the truck yard for time and a half...

That didn’t quite tally with even his old house. Let alone this new one and his current ‘shed’.

Still, it’s his money and he has worked for it.

Crack on GM. 8-)

He's settled down with a kid now so that will mean two things:

TV money will be spent on providing for his family

Road Racing is likely to take a back seat, I would be surprised if he does more than the odd classic race here and there

And I fully support him doing the above. If I was in his position I would be taking as much cash as CH4 were willing to throw my way as it's bound to die off at some point.

If you could have a nice house paid off and a few quid in savings, then go back to the day job you adore with no real financial pressures then crack on

I suspect he's on the far side of his popularity curve which generally happens to all presenters in one way or another. It's only natural that TV execs will look for new, fresh faces (and cheaper wages) so you see people come from nowhere, present more and more and then less and less and they go back to their (new, bigger) house and retire.

I'm surprised at this thread.

I doubt there was any better car/van based programme on at the time.

It's T.V. It isn't real and is there for amusement.

I watched it and haven't smashed up my T.V and sent Channel 4 the bill.

If he was a real man he would have attempted the record in a highly modified LDV Pilot.
