Sounds like it could be the filter gauze in the fuel tank blocking up. Try cleaning that up. If run on pump fuel they rarely give trouble but a car that age may well have a blockage. My ZX had what looked like snot in it. 25 year cleaning intervals is acceptable really.

Thanks I'll have rummage for the gauze in the morning.

I don't think there is either of those.  It's just got the metal canister in-line filter. I presume it must be an electric pump in the tank as I can't see a lift pump.

Odd, I've had XUD 306's, 205, 405's and ZX's of varying ages and none of them have had an electric fuel pump.

I only had what my wife calls a 'blokes look', should it be mechanical lift pump?

It's not hidden on the back of the block is it?

None of them have had a mechanical lift pump. Just some sort of manual pump with a one way valve in to initially prime the main fuel pump. If the one way valve isn't working perfectly the fuel runs back and causes starting problems. Early cars had a filter with a push top pump to prime, later ones have the fuel grenade to simply squeeze until it goes hard, if it doesn't stay hard it needs replacing.

vs AEC Matador

And in the same vein, Clan Crusader vs Scammell Crusader ;)

I reckon it should have the Lucas glass bowl filter with plunger on top. It's gone missing in action and someone has added an inline filter in it's place.

Looking again the bracket for it is still on the car.

Presumably the inline filter doesn't have a non return valve. I've got a replacement inline filter coming, I'll need to add a non return valve if it doesn't have one.

That's definitely the wrong filter for an XUD I reckon, they either had big spin on filters or 'sandwich' filters. That looks like a petrol fuel filter.

You can buy a BMW 320D or Rover L series filter that works well as a diesel in line filter and buy an inline one way valve too if you're worried about that.

Quick update.

I'd ordered a replacement inline fuel filter of the same part number as fitted to the car.

However the good people of AS have brought me to the realisation that what is fitted presently is not right. So I'm looking at options to source a correct or more suitable filter for the car, either a CAV sandwich filter and primer, or go down the route that LP highlighted to me above.

In the meantime, the replacement inline filter has arrived so I chucked it on the car anyway and that has solved the starting problem for now.

Don't do it, there's a reason people fit XUDs with inline filters. The original CAV filters and housings are rubbish, they create air leaks as they age, can be a pig to prime and the parts aren't readily available when they fail. Inline filters eliminate these problems with the added bonus that they're easier to change. Match them up to a later XUD primer bulb rather than a one-way valve and they're immensely easy to prime, too.
