Time to call it a day . Rover 45

My 45 has covered 124,000 miles - 60,000 under my ownership However , it has been sat idle for most of the year I'd I've only covered around 1500 miles this year. It will need a new CV gaitor , front discs , possibly more welding on the sills and rear tyres. Cambelt is due at the end of the year and rear silencer looking crusty. Head gasket hasn't been done since 55,000 miles , but is still ok. To top it off , yesterday the brakes failed and the pedal now goes to the floor ! The second time this has happened in 2 years.

My daily is a 130,000 07 Mazda 6 which is proving most reliable. The 45 is a top spec model and all external panels are 'mint'but I'm not sure it makes much sense anymore. 124,000 isn't a bad innings for one either. But it's got to the point where everytime I drive I'm waiting for the next thing to go wrong. Time for it to go?

Get it weighed. 120 quid in your wallet, problem solved.

If you can do all the work yourself and like a sense of achievement then keep it.  If both of those things aren't true then get a quote to have the work done.  I think the answer will make itself known from that.

That's good, since 120 Quid would buy a minter.

Depends how much you like it.

My MG has done 180,000 miles now.Its rusty round the edges, has odd panels after I crashed it,& is leaking oil from the camshaft seals(again).

I love the thing though,I've had it 10 1/2 years & can't imagine not having it any more.

Isn't all that just regular wear/tear/servicing work for a car of that age/milleage? My 2005 Civic has just hit 100k and needs new calipers/discs/pads all around, PAS is on it's way out and the clutch is at the end of it's life, cambelt was done at 70k, around the same point the exhaust fell off and a halfshaft sheared...

Having said that there isn't much point having a car sat around that you don't use...

This.

Discs/exhaust/tyres/CV are standard maintenance costs for any car

Cambelt (assuming its a K-series) MG Rover Mobile Mechanics will do for £150 plus their fuel costs, or just play cambelt roulette http://www.mg-rovermobilemechanics.com/pricelist

Head gasket - doesn't need looking at

Latest brake fail - try bleeding the system, but sounds like master cylinder (seals maybe ?)

Sills - get a friendly welder to give you a price - may be cheaper than you think.

Does it have any MOT left ?

Ultimately Bangernomics has a part to play - is it worth spending the dosh ? Roffle and I'm sure someone would snap your arm off for a low* mileage 45.

[vulture mode]Don't suppose it has sandstone beige leather seats does it ?[/vulture]
