Selling a plate that is on retention?

I've sold a plate to another forum member and have it on retention. The retention document (V778) doesn't really have helpful information regarding how I transfer it to the buyers ownership. Anyone able to advise on that process?

There’s a space on the V788 to fill in the new owners address (new nominee, I believe)...fill that in and send it off to Swansea and they’ll send a new retention document out to the new owner with their name and address on it so they can allocate it to their car (which should have the same name and address on its V5 as the name and address on the retention document)

There is a section for Nominee details but only has space for first name, surname or company name. The only space for an address is the grantee's change of address, I don't see a way of changing the name of the grantee.

That's strange just last week I put one of my private plates onto someone else's car over the net and it all went through without a hitch, never knew I wasn't supposed to do that.

I like this :-

"If the nominee dies

The person who has the right to use the private number can change the ‘nominee’ (the person you’re giving the number to). Fill in section 2 of the V750 or V778 with the new nominee’s details, sign the form and send it to:"

Presumably this means they expect the dead to sign paperwork? LOL

Nowt wrong with that. Once it is on a car with another recorded keeper, you loose all your rights to it.

You have plate, your transfer to someone else car, they chuck you a few quid in return, all good, it is now their right to display the plate. We never actually 'own' the VRN, we only have the right to display it.

I have to say, the DVSA have made a cracking job of the on-line transfer service. I took a plate off my lads car and put on retention. I then transferred a plate off my daughters car onto my lads car when she bought the car off him. All done on-line in a few minutes. Just have tho throw away the Log Books that are expired when they arrive
