Ah yeah, that is quite a considerable distance isn't it!

 

Due to the totally insane way the trains are organised in the UK, it's often possible to get a cheaper fare by buying separate tickets for different legs of your journey.  There are several websites that do this for you and you can sometimes get different results from different ones.  I've just tried Newcastle to Axminster on splitticketing.trainsplit.com and got it down to £140... I'd probably still be out in your position too.

 

When I was still hoping to get to Shitefest I was getting lower prices than that for Aberdeen, I think £100 odd?

Those tickety-split websites often don't give you half the savings available if you use your own head. I managed York-Cotswolds for £37 vs £79 on ticket split sites. Well worth experimenting.
