electrical problems?

IIRC the ignition switches are crap on MK1 golf stuff, try giving the key a wiggle.

This will be an electrical problem, the wipers and blowers are all big current draws so an iffy earth or positive feed won't do them any favours.

Hmm that makes sense - he has wired in a push button starter -the live being a thin bit of electrical wire clamped on to the battery positive terminal - could this perhaps be the culprit do you think?

Older VW's had what they called an "X" relay, which turned off the high consumers when the starter was operated, did he wire the button due to an issue with the ignition switch? I think there may be a connection, albeit a high resistance one.....

Yep that's right, you got it in one, dodgy ignition switch. Still doesn't account for the intermittent nature of the fault though should I replace the X relay perhaps?

not unheard of for the spindles to get grubby /rusty and slow things down

might be worth taking it apart and greasing it
