I wonder if it was someones father/grandad who's past away and left it to them in a will thats then traded that in as well as there other car maybe towards a new one?.

Thats a very good point, and is probably the situation which created this cars undeserved demise. What a fool, selling it would have created much more money for them, and it might have been one of the rare occasions where threatening SCRAPPAGE in the ebay listing might have actually worked to the sellers advantage.

What a truly sad story about this old car  It's survived for over 5 decades and now it comes to this. I am now harbouring deep desires to smash 'Lord' Medelsons smug face in using Gordon Browns head as a hammer  I just can't believe anybody could be so stupid to do this, surely this lovely old RM would be worth more than £2000. No doubt once it's gone for crushing, it will be spirited away to be painted in dulux to be the star attraction at something like Hendnesford pre '68

Putting it round the oval seems a bit pointless, given it's got an ash chassis. Come to think of it, maybe it might teach somebody a lesson!

I think you'll find it's the body frame, rather than the chassis that's ash...

OK my mistake, still wouldn't be advisable to go playing dodgems with it, not to mention fair.

Who actually said that the certificate had been issued? Am I missing something, or has the plate been transferred to an 04 reg Mondeo, meaning the Riley was traded in against an 04 reg Mondeo, therefore this was not a true scrappage deal as the car sold did not qualify? This is quite a weird tale, makes me wonder if it was traded in against a dealer`s homebrew scrap scheme and there was no £1000 cheque from the govt, but someone scrapped it anyway? Eh?

I said something like that back on page 3....

Hang on, if the number is off, it can't have been scrapped yet, and if the number is transferred, they can't get a destruction notice with that reg on it. So what's happened to the actual original carrier of the reg? It could be open to getting a new number, and so could be free and clear!

As well as raising questions about this particular case, it`s the apparent age of the new car that puzzles me, if the Riley really has been scrappaged against a 5 year old car, outside of the government scheme, then if this "scrap it anyway" thing is common practice then effectively this premature scrapping has the potential to go on forever and not cease in March as first thought.

TBH I didn't see anything to say the Riley was part exed against the Mondy, just the Riley's plate ended up on the Mondy. That could have happened before it was put through scrappage, but can't see how if the plate transfer hadn't been completed (got to have a plate even to scrap it in this case).

Update - the turd has been saved. :D The Riley Motor Club got involved apparently. Good on them!

Moar details PLS. Has it been passed on as a complete car?

Well that's one bit of good news! As autohausdolby said, is it still in one piece?

Thank you to everyone who has been instrumental in saving the Riley!A chap has just finished on the phone to my boss having agreed to purchase and therefore save the Riley from becoming a Coke can (or worse, a Ford!)Once again thanks to anyone who may have mentioned it to someone who's mentioned it to someone else. I understand we've made it onto Radio 4, into Classic and Sports Car magazine and touched various other organisations in the effort to save a piece of motoring heritage.

Ridiculous but you'd have to think that the bad guy is the owner who traded it in. Surely if he wanted rid and needed as much cash back from it as possible then sell the plate off and the the car itself must be worth a reasonable amount?Whilst I don't think the Riley can ever return to the road again hopefully it could make someone a good parts donor.Saw a list of 'notable' cars scrapped under the scheme yesterday. Includes such cars as Capri, TR7, Bond Equipe, Singer Vogue, Porsche 924. Full article here - http://www.am-online.com/news/story/Scr ... s/42900259

I think we covered this on another thread. Surely stuff like the Bond Equipe is worth MORE than £2000???

The Singer Vogue was saved. The Kia dealer insisted on selling it on and actually took a bit of a hit on it. Good on him! Published in CCW last week...The Riley RM has gone and was apparently traded in for a MINI! Grrrr...

This was stated in only the page before this in this very thread....

Thanks Fred. I'd already uncovered that and was heading back here for an update having not read the thread entirely...
