Can any Shropshire Shitters recommend a garage that will get my E39 530d running again ?

It's been a non starter for quite a while now ...

I originally ran it out of fuel! though it did start after I put a gallon in.

Ran fine until a week later when it just wouldn't start one morning.

 

Could be fuel pump under passenger seat or the diesel pump or something else.

 

Just want it diagnosed and repaired by someone who knows what they're doing and won't rip me off...

 

It's a shame it's just sitting there gathering moss ... It's a good car.

Might be best to get it plugged in .......they have 3 fuel pumps. Tank, middle and hp.

 

Plug in prob cost a little but cheaper than changings bits till it goes

I have a 99 530d and the pump in the the tank developed an intermittent fault at 240k miles. The pump under the floor gently buzzed when car was ok  but you could hear it cavitating when it wasn't being supplied. When the rear seat was lifted I think we could hear the pump when it was running. The Snap On scanner wasn't much help, -diagnosed low fuel pressure. Yea, thanks. Mebby someone who knew what were doing could have got more info though. 

I think the tank pump is the usual suspect, I got complete 2nd hand sender unit for £45 from Quarry Motors, I think a bare pump was about £60 from ECP.

Buy a Creator C310+ from Amazon for £45 or so. You'll need a 20 pin adapter - about a fiver. Best £50 any older BMW DIY type can spend.

Best to find a bmw specialist . Normally ex bmw techs who have the knowledge but don’t charge the rates .

Have you tried putting a sniff of easy start through the air intake ?

Before spending money, I'd check the first pump - the one probably in the tank(?) or right next to it, as I've known these crap out or get moody when they are run out of fuel as they can overheat when sucking air from a dry tank. (they are lubed & cooled by the fuel around them and passing through them in operation). 

 

Should be simple enough to disconnect the output and check there's flow from the tank into the main fuel circuit (up to the next pump at least).

I used to rent vans to a Polish mechanic.  I think he was a BMW specialist.  I have searched him up on the database and will PM you the number I had for him a couple of years ago.

Does your 530d have a throttle body with a flap pivoting inside it? Only reason why I ask is because my Bora TDi once failed to start because the flap had stuck in the closed position due to accumulation of crap and lack of lube. Once it was freed, cleaned out and lubricated, everything was grand. Hasn't failed to start since then.

How much fuel is in it now? I've heard of cars needing up to 3 gallons before they'll start after being run dry. Maybe something to do with the shape of the fuel tanks in question. Do these have a saddle type tank?

Are these a bit like the 75's where the in tank pumps start to give up? I need to keep mine above 1/4 tank.

Was told that as long as there's plenty of fuel in the 'bra' fuel tank then it doesn't matter if tank pump is U.S.

Thanks for your input .... Yes it has a 'bra' type tank....Which has about 4-5 gallons in it

Yes,though not easystart ... Didn't want it turning into an easistartaholic!

Used carb cleaner,gentler apparently but no joy.

I bought it from KinkerSaab .... !!

 

Do you think he might put a fiver into the recovery truck pot if I plumped to repatriate it??

I've got an e39 530d as well that was bought with several issues, including non running. I've cured most of them myself and it now runs really well but I did have a bit of advice from the e39 page on facebook. 

 

They're a really helpful bunch and quite a few bmw techs on there too who seem happy to offer advice when needed.

It did on mine. I can't remember how much it had in but I don't run about with fuel lights on.

If it's a fuel supply problem you should be able to pinpoint it by pulling pipes off one at a time at filter, under floor pump and tank pump.

Mine did it 60 miles from home and I was pretty sure it was the tank pump after a bit of faffing, went back and fitted a complete sender unit. It took longer to get the bloody seat back in properly!

And yes the seat's a biatch to replace.

I'd pull the in tank pump/sender and check for metal filings before doing much else I've just had one with the same fault..hp pump gone

I'm thinking it could be the HP pump given up the ghost....
