XUD lucas pump bleeding

Recommended Posts

Just fitted another lucas pump to my 205 TD, was hoping to prime the bulb on top of the fuel filter and it would fire into life but alas, no.

I've cracked the banjo off on top of the pump and primed the bulb until a nice stream of diesel came out.

I also cranked each injector off one by one whilst cranking until I couldn't see any bubbles. This wasn't a spurt of fuel though, just a seep.

This is the filter fitted, not a standard lucas one, is it a bosch one? Sorry if pic is shit.

Am I doing something wrong?

Stop solenoid jammed or not working ? Take it out and remove the plunger to confirm

Coded stop solenoid on the new* pump ?

Might need to swop solenoid over.

Ask me how I know....

I had a similar problem with one of those fuel filter housings, diesel would gush out of the bleed screw at the top but the engine still wouldn't start due to air ingress. Nothing appeared to be wrong and I kept replacing other stuff, but eventually the only thing which got the engine running was binning the original filter setup and replacing it with something else (in my case a BMW E46 320d filter with a later XUD primer bulb).

Can you hear the solenoid click at all?

It sounds like it might be the solenoid. It doesn't click.

My 205 has a plug in immobiliser on the dash, perhaps I should swap the solenoids.

I actually already bought a grenade and a BMW filter a while ago, so could well be worth fitting.

Even if only for the superior bleedyness of the grenade.

There's normally a fuel preheater on the o/s rear of the block.

This is where my old ones used to suck in the air as the alloy housing went porous.

Was a common issue as the units turned 20-odd. May not be relevant, but useful nonetheless.

So sticking the plunger back in with it running will stop it? The car is on axle stands at the moment with some suspension bits missing, so I won't be able to stall it.

I'll get a look at it tomorrow.

Fair enough.

The pump has a STOP lever on it. Will pulling that cut it out?

if you can access the stop solenoid and its wire then turn "ignition on" and measure voltage going to solenoid     is it a good 12+ volts?       if yes then take solenoid off and hold plunger in the coil (so it doesn't drop out) and switch the ignition on and off several times   does the plunger go back and forward?   Carry on from there.

They can be a bugger to get going, especially if the pump is dry. Get a 1lt gear oil bottle or similar container of diesel and prime the pump via the fuel inlet.

I'll try priming it like that. I'd prime the bulb on the filter until it went hard, but after cranking the engine, I'd need to prime the bulb again.

Will get the wishbones etc back on before I mess around with the solenoid plunger. The solenoid isn't armoured on either of the pumps so it should be easy enough.

just an outside chance........but if there is a leak off line as well you haven't got them wrong way around have you?

Well, it wasn't the solenoid!

I took the plunger out but it still wouldn't go. I primed the fuck out of it and eventually it started but ran like shit, the rev were all over the place from 1k to 3.5k.

It was doing similar before changing the pump so I thought for fuck sake.

Turns out it was indeed the filter housing. Fitted the BMW filter and grenade and now it sits at just slightly below 1k revs always.

Back of the net!

Thanks for all the help people.
