honda accord generation 6 petrol 1.8 OBD2 ? or NOT ?

mate has just rang me because his malfunction indicator light came on.

I have a crude OBD2 reader I'm borrowing and said I'd plug it in to see what gives.

 

If it has a socket where will it be, and are the codes standard across manufacturers ? (I have a list of codes for the HOmegarwd)

I'm pretty sure it's not obd2, most Hondas that age have a double blue plug or a five pin plug you bridge with a paperclip to get fault codes. 

 

Check the battery voltage as the few times I got the manfunction light on mine was due to low voltage/duff battery.

As HB says, you can bridge the connector underneath the glove box with a paper clip and watch and count the engine management flash then Google the fault codes.

My 92 Corvette was OBD1 {12 pin, not 16?} and this was what you did. It worked, too.

I found it. Definitely an OBD2 connector.  The issue was P1870 which is VVTEC system fault. One of the causes was low oil pressure due to low oil level. He added oil, to bring it from Below min to max. Erased code. That was Friday. He's done 100 miles and no spanner light has yet come on. They will teach him to ignore the oil level.

It may need the vtec solenoid filter cleaning if it does it again

Do these like to eat the cam end seals like the H22? Might be worth a look for an oil leak. Either that or he's been 'vtecing' everywhere..

Honda aren't consistent. On early '90s D series cars with PGM-FI (Civic, Concerto, 216 etc) there is no diagnostic socket, but a blinking light directly on the ECU that puts out codes when the ignition is set to point 1. To get to it you have to pull up the carpet in the passenger footwell or something.
