hpi_matrix Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 While I was out my neighbour knocked on my door and spoke to my partner, apparently the power steering is no longer working and he was asking for my opinion on getting it fixed or scrapping it. I'm guessing it probably something major but is there anything easy that could be wrong? I can only think of the belt? Failing that would anyone be interested? Reg: Y443DDA Cavcraft 1
Lacquer Peel Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 Newer versions have electric power steering but not the 6N as far as I know. According to Total Car Check it's actually a 1.4 TDI, £30 a year road tax.
Sigmund Fraud Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 My money is on a fluid leak - the problem is likely to be a pinhole in the (notoriously corrosion-prone) power steering pipes. They are, of course, £££ to buy and a royal PITA to replace.

I have had success with a load of acetone to clean the pipe and then wrapped it in fibreglass sheet (not csm, some decent 2x2 twill) and a load or resin. Idea was to get through an mot but it's till going six years later as the father in law still has the car.
matty879 Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 where is the car, what sort of money?i may know someone if buyage is an option

hpi_matrix Posted May 14, 2017 Author Posted May 14, 2017 PS fluid pissing out the pump (not the hoses?!). Diagnosis it's fucked (but a 2nd pump will see it going)
Sigmund Fraud Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 I would much rather change the pump than the power steering hoses on those. I also suspect that the pump is the same across the range, so finding a cheap spare should be very easy,
Sigmund Fraud Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 That looks pretty good for £60 ! I really hope it doesn't get scrapped...
Sigmund Fraud Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 Oh, and if anyone (...else...) is thinking about saving this, I checked ETKA and it seems that the power steering pump is indeed shared with the petrol models, and most scrapyards have dozens of those lying around. chaseracer 1

Sigmund Fraud Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 I got 6N0145157, ETKA says you find them in Polo 6N1/6N2 but also Golf IIIs.

Sigmund Fraud Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 I got 1H0422155E made in Saginaw US of A! Computer says no... The part you have in your garage clearly does not exist ! So much about progress, eh ?
hpi_matrix Posted May 23, 2017 Author Posted May 23, 2017 Hmm I see this part is cheap on the bay of e, instead of sitting in the sun on Saturday I might lay on my back and help the guy out. Sigmund Fraud 1

It's really easy to change - the aux belt tensioner is spring loaded, so whipping the belt off takes seconds. Then (IIRC) you undo two pipe unions and two bolts holding the pump to its mounting and that's it ! Just make sure you have the correct steering fluid to top the system up - it's the green VAG jizz that looks like LHM but isn't. Easiest and cheapest place to buy is the VW stealership, one litre is more than enough. Given it is at least 18 years old if original it might be superceded. True, but ETKA should still have it. Proof that a stupid computer can never replace a grumpy, chain-smoking old man in a warehouse coat.

Luckily I have some as I have a Seat Leon, unluckily my discovery has decided to piss its brake fluid (though I dont know where! I suspect in the brake booster) so I will be preoccupied with that. On a side note my old man is looking at a 1.4 pez polo (mk3), the oil light is on, does it have the fancy dynamic oil pressure gubbins?

The 6Ns are too old for that. They're so cheap nowadays that there's no point buying one with a potentially buggered engine. The usual 6N advice stands : check sills/floors/rear arches for rust, check front wishbone bushes, make sure the gearbox is silent.
hpi_matrix Posted May 27, 2017 Author Posted May 27, 2017 Just spoke to him, if you going to repair it he'll take £40 minus the battery
